Description I took this photo last night, so not quite the perigee moon, which is tonight. However, I'm getting better at taking photos of the moon. This photo turned out quite a bit clearer than my photo of the Supermoon last March. You can even see craters in this photo! I'm going to try to take photos again tonight, but I think this may be as good as it gets with my camera. I'm too excited about the clarity of this photo not to post this one.

Enjoy!

Did you do this with a tripod and telephoto? My moon shots aren't bad, but no detail like that!! Really nice photo!!

Actually, this picture is a super lucky shot. I have a Nikon 5100 DSLR camera that can get this, but I don't have a lense over 200. I was lamenting that fact while first trying to get photos using the SLR, switching ISOs around and playing with different features, and then zooming in with the edit feature, all of which wasn't working out too great. So much for skill without the help of a telephoto lense, which I figured but tried anyway.

So, I switched to my Nikon P90 (which is just a beefed up point and shoot camera). It has a 21X zoom lense (or maybe it's only 19...). All I did was zoom as far as it would go and allowed it to do that extra zoom thing it does when you keep hitting the zoom button, until the entire frame was the moon. I used a chain link fence post to steady the camera with and snapped numerous shots with the sport setting. This photo came out of those shots. I did the same thing last year during the super moon using the same camera and the shots did not come out nearly as vividly as this.

Since there was no real skill involved here, I think the photos came out more clearly this time for one reason...It was a super clear night. There were no clouds, no haze, no smog...Last year I do remember there being a tiny bit of haze and I think that made all the difference. The light of the moon was able to really shine and the camera was able to capture all the details. It surprised me, it really did.

My Canon is an advanced point n zoom witha 20 times zoom. Its what I used in March, 2011, it didn't do too bad, but this one sure beat mine! I even used a tripod!

Sounds like the Canon version of my advanced point and shoot Nikon. The Canon should have gotten a good shot too. I'll stick with the clear night reasoning...

Very nice photo ^^ All my mother and I had on us where our camera phones XD YAY FOR GLOWING DOTS!! lol. Although I have to say I am a little disappointed with the "super" moon. I guess because of where I live I am just to used to the "Hunt" moons that come during fall ^^'

Thank you ^^
LOL about the glowing dots. I got that picture in my mind and started laughing. Now I'm curious...Why are you disappointed with the 'super' moon?

Your welcome ^^
" its a UFO!!!" LOL xp
Because I live in a mid-high elevation mountain area and during things like.the autumn moon( which goes by many names but I personally call them Hunt moons) look so much bigger than the super moon does :/ I'm dont think that the autumn/hunt moon are closer than the super moon so I don't know why they look bigger. But me living where I do ruined the supermoon I guess XD

Thank you! Did you get to see it? It was cloudy here, so I'm glad I got this shot the night before.

Ya, I got to see it, it was amazing! Even with my bad eyesight (can't see anything unless it's in front of my face) I was able to see the moon very, very clearly.

Awesome! Love how you can see all the details.
It's snowing here so I won't get to see the moon tonight

Thanks! I am so excited about those details.
Aw man, you're the second person who said it was snowing. Did it clear up a little at least?

ladyleyn In reply to Letohatchee [2012-05-06 15:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Probably because the other person and I live in the same city

It cleared a bit, I was able to make out the light from the moon behind some clouds when I got off work. I'll just have to make do with photos from everyone else

mmmm, so pretty, makes me wanna go out tonight and stare at the moon, which would be nice if i had a nicer dark place to view it

Letohatchee In reply to Flameshield [2012-05-06 15:18:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I hear ya on the darker place. I would like to have a darker place too. I love moonlight shadows and stuff and you can't really see that all that well here with all the lights and stuff.

*Mind blown*

Way awesome! I'm gonna see how my camera holds up to this tonight... if it ever stops snowing

Letohatchee In reply to Kenthayle [2012-05-06 15:14:28 +0000 UTC]

Mine too! I'm not sure I can get a better shot than this, lol.

Thank you! Snowing! Goodness, that's some late snow. It stayed cloudy for us, so I didn't get another chance to take a photo, but that's okay. I hope it stopped snowing for ya!

It did stop snowing, but unfortunately the overcast didn't go away. No supermoon for me

Wow, look at all those details in this picture! How did you get a photo this clear? It looks amazing~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Letohatchee In reply to Lecidre [2012-05-06 15:12:51 +0000 UTC]

I know! I couldn't believe it when I saw all the details. I zoomed my camera as far as it would go, held it steady on top of a chainlink fence and snapped the photo. I think the night being such a clear night helped too. There wasn't any haze or clouds obscurring the view, so that must have gone a long way into the clarity of the shot. Thank you!
