Did you do this with a tripod and telephoto? My moon shots aren't bad, but no detail like that!! Really nice photo!!

Actually, this picture is a super lucky shot. I have a Nikon 5100 DSLR camera that can get this, but I don't have a lense over 200. I was lamenting that fact while first trying to get photos using the SLR, switching ISOs around and playing with different features, and then zooming in with the edit feature, all of which wasn't working out too great. So much for skill without the help of a telephoto lense, which I figured but tried anyway.
So, I switched to my Nikon P90 (which is just a beefed up point and shoot camera). It has a 21X zoom lense (or maybe it's only 19...). All I did was zoom as far as it would go and allowed it to do that extra zoom thing it does when you keep hitting the zoom button, until the entire frame was the moon. I used a chain link fence post to steady the camera with and snapped numerous shots with the sport setting. This photo came out of those shots. I did the same thing last year during the super moon using the same camera and the shots did not come out nearly as vividly as this.
Since there was no real skill involved here, I think the photos came out more clearly this time for one reason...It was a super clear night. There were no clouds, no haze, no smog...Last year I do remember there being a tiny bit of haze and I think that made all the difference. The light of the moon was able to really shine and the camera was able to capture all the details. It surprised me, it really did.

My Canon is an advanced point n zoom witha 20 times zoom. Its what I used in March, 2011, it didn't do too bad, but this one sure beat mine! I even used a tripod!

Very nice photo ^^ All my mother and I had on us where our camera phones XD YAY FOR GLOWING DOTS!! lol. Although I have to say I am a little disappointed with the "super" moon. I guess because of where I live I am just to used to the "Hunt" moons that come during fall ^^'

Your welcome ^^
" its a UFO!!!" LOL xp
Because I live in a mid-high elevation mountain area and during things like.the autumn moon( which goes by many names but I personally call them Hunt moons) look so much bigger than the super moon does :/ I'm dont think that the autumn/hunt moon are closer than the super moon so I don't know why they look bigger. But me living where I do ruined the supermoon I guess XD

Ya, I got to see it, it was amazing! Even with my bad eyesight (can't see anything unless it's in front of my face) I was able to see the moon very, very clearly.

Thanks! I am so excited about those details.
Aw man, you're the second person who said it was snowing. Did it clear up a little at least?

Mine too! I'm not sure I can get a better shot than this, lol.
Thank you! Snowing! Goodness, that's some late snow. It stayed cloudy for us, so I didn't get another chance to take a photo, but that's okay. I hope it stopped snowing for ya!

I know! I couldn't believe it when I saw all the details. I zoomed my camera as far as it would go, held it steady on top of a chainlink fence and snapped the photo. I think the night being such a clear night helped too. There wasn't any haze or clouds obscurring the view, so that must have gone a long way into the clarity of the shot. Thank you!
