Description

This piece I crafted in my digital art class 12th grade (at time of posting, about a year and a half ago), tracing color sections from an image of Smaug from the film. It is not a copy; however, neither is it completely original. The method I used, detailed below, can be summed up as tracing and simplifying the image digitally.

I used a combination of a color selection tool (selecting analogous adjacent and analogous disconnected portions of the image) and my own artist’s eye to digitally outline sections of similar hues/shades; I then filled those sections with color “eyedropped” from the image itself. I repeated this process for every section of color you see, also adding some of my own touches where I thought the image needed them (eg. couple spots with slight gradient). It was done on Adobe Photoshop, which was provided by my school in the computer lab that served as our classroom.
