POV - Tanzanite

“Can you do that spell thing to call them?” Tanzanite asks. “Check in on how they're doing?”

It's been on her mind since they returned. Letting the nasty alien warlord leave in his shitty little ship had been bad enough, but the thought of just leaving the cat-girl and the ship out there by themselves... well, she didn't have a lot of faith that they would be able to cut it on their own. A broken slave being unbroken by a barely sentient ship seemed like the blind leading the blind.

“No, I don't have it memorized,” Alexis answered, then her tone grew more firm. “Why are you giggling?”

“Oh, nothing,” Tanzanite struggled and failed to suppress more giggling.

“What?”

“It's just. I mean, I was Lizzy in Pride and Prejudice back in eighth grade... and I could still totally do her whole I was wrong speech by heart right now.”

“It's not that kind of memorizing.”

“Oh, yeah, totally. I'm sure it's way harder with magic or whatever.”

“If you're done, I had something to show you, remember?”

Tanzanite nodded, tamping down on her grin. The sorceress had been quite mysterious about what she wanted to show her. And the purple-haired heroine was genuinely curious to find out what it was.

The sorceress settled onto the floor, crossing her armored legs. That metal had to be uncomfortable to wear, and Tanzanite reminded herself to try and remember to ask Summer how it felt... and maybe to see if they could order a novelty version of it. Now that could be fun...

Alexis's chanting drew Tanzanite back to the moment. The witch's hand began to glow. The glow stretched outward until it touched the gem in the purple-haired heroine's skirt, and then returned to Alexis's hand. Legs crossed, the sorceress floated up off the floor a little. Was she showing off with that part? Probably. Glowing embers showered down from the sorceress's hand, and then Christy's eyes went wide as she saw figures begin to form within the glow.

“Is this payback for the memorization jibes?” Tanzanite asked, wrinkling her nose.

The scene showed an alien woman dressed in a skirt like hers, complete with gem, locked to a rack. The scene was silent, but Christy could see the woman's anguish well enough to know that she was screaming.

“Just a minute,” Alexis said softly. “Maybe an older memory.”

The scene blurred for a moment, and then reformed. A different woman was at the center of the scene, slender and elven but obviously strong. The elf was dressed in a skirt and boots just like Tanzanite's, but also with gloves and a pistol like Sharpshooter's. She was fighting a trio of the reptilian aliens they'd encountered on the ship. Christy watched as she dispatched the three of them with ease.

“But she said it was a slave belt,” Christy said breathlessly.

“She was wrong. But it was just what she had been told.”

“How did you know?”

It had been Alexis who had shared the translated information about the gem from the catgirl. Had she realized later she'd made a mistake?

“I didn't. It was a guess.”

“Good guess.”

“When I saw the garbage ship that the alien left in, everything came together. Those reptiles are scavengers and pirates. They don't make anything. They just take things and use them. People. Weapons. Ships. Those gems.”

“So it's not a slave belt,” Tanzanite feels as though she might start floating just like the sorceress.

“Does that look like a slave?”
