Description This is the costume worn by the Great Tyrant / Black Queen in the scene in which she first meets Barbarella. She is prowling the streets of the sin city Sogo for action in disguise. I suspect that this was inspired by actual behavior of the Roman Emperors Caligula and Nero that had been recorded in Tacitus.

Barbarella refers to her as "the One-eyed Wench".

The costume was designed for the actress Anita Pallenberg by Jacques Fonteray. Obviously Anita had to err... "adjust her bikini line" to wear it.

It was all genuine black leather and Tuscan red suede.
I eliminated several silver chains that were visual clutter.
This leaves a pair of articulated spinning stilettoes as her accessories. In the film the actually worked.

In 20-20 hindsight this is obvious SMBD fetish wear. If anyone in American audiences recognized it as such in 1968, they didn't admit it. This movie was just beyond the fringe of the familiar. Because it was made in France, they got away with it.

Likewise there was a fetish costume worn an episode of the British TV series "The Avengers" called "The Hellfire Club" that inspired immitation (rip-off) by John Byrne to create the characters of the Black Queen and White Queen in the X-Men. Perhaps I should do an expose of THAT.

Barbarella was absolutely hilarious.

The title reminds me of the episode Cap'n Drakken, where Drakken kept calling Shego a wench.

"Call me wench again and we'll be planning a burial at sea!"

THANX.

I got out on this KP cast as Barbarella thing this summer. I posted a bunch of Barbarella related images on DA. Wench-Shego appears in my pic "Pretty Pretty" as well.

Oh, I've heard of "Barbarella"...haven't seen it yet, but I'll be sure to rectify that. Most of my sci-fi education has come from Harryhausen/O'Brien, Toho, Star Wars/Trek (about 75% the former) and Mystery Science Theater 3000. As for Bond, my dad's a casual fan and I've picked up several of the original Fleming paperbacks from various bookstores.

Fair enough...those stickers are more than suitably nasty. Perhaps some Rosa Klebb-style shoe-blades could complement 'em.

If you know "From Russia With Love", you should know "Barbarella".

Gotta say, I dig the stilettos, though Shego might not need 'em outside the occasional need for low-key wetwork. Lighting up like a radioactive Christmas tree has its drawbacks.

That noted, (a) strapless eyepatches are something you just don't see every day, and (b) that cutout is really something. Who'd expect their fearsome despotic ruler to pass 'em on the street in a getup like this?

Ah, but the premise is that Shego is portraying the role of the Great Tyrant from "Barbarella" who has none of those powers.

The eyepatch as seen in the film has no string. It was probably applied to the actress' face with spirit glue in the manner that prosthetic appliances were.
