The Cascade region of Oregon is one of the most violently volcanic areas of North America. 7,700 years ago the former Mount Mazama (once as tall as Mt. Rainier) blew its top off in one of the most violent eruptions in human time. Like Ngorngoro in Africa it left a vast caldera. This is today filled with the deepest lake in the United States. This blue water is over 600 meters deep. Wizard Island has been slowly growing out of the bottom of the crater. Mazama is still volcanically active.
