EDIT: I actually drew this before reading Another Note, which I have since done. I must say it was rather entertaining and gave me a new appreciation for strawberry jam. More relevantly--and without ruining the plot--I can assure you, this really is L. Honest.

After finishing my previous piece (linky ), I got to pondering the ins and outs of what happened to Light after he died. To begin with, I was on board with idea that he, as with all other humans, ended up in Mu, "Nothingness", versus him becoming a shinigami. But the latter option was so much more interesting to me. And to logically justify that outcome, I created a loophole.

Light, by owning and using a Death Note, acted in all but name as a shinigami in life so that he became something other than human in death. Not being a human, the rule about going to Mu didn't apply to him.

Next came figuring out the implications of death god Light running around the shinigami realm, and I ended up with this scenario:
Light resurrects as a shinigami-hybrid (my reasoning being that the level of transformation depends on whether the notebook owner traded for the eyes, making them even more shinigami than human). In explaining to Light what has happened, Ryuk reveals that the other shinigami don't trust Light. His intellect, ambition, downright deviousness and the fact he's killed a death god make him a liability. They don't want Light to go unsupervised, but don't believe Ryuk is right for the task. The second Ryuk gets bored, he could turn Light loose for sheer entertainment. Instead, Ryuk had to seek out a proper babysitter who could rein in Light and his scheming.

Enter the resurrected L. He agreed to become Light's keeper under the pretense of seeing Kira is brought to justice and prevention of Light taking revenge on the task force members who brought him down. But really, I doubt L finds it such a terrible burden--why spend eternity tethered to someone you find utterly irredeemable ?

The arrangement becomes that Light and L share a Death Note (that L keeps on his person, out of Light's hands) and the lifespan gained is split between them. Which is why I used L's font for the notebook cover and part of Kira's symbol for the bag.Whew. I'd like to do something more with this plotbunny, but I hesitate to make any promises, as I'm already drawing another graphic novel and constructing a portfolio to go job hunting with.
