Love the work so far. Have a thought though, could you extend the chest piece so there would not be the need to look so closely at the hips? Through Dr. Who the chest pieces got longer and more stream lined, it would allow for more tubing and might make them look a little more "beefy" without actually making them larger/wider. Just some random thoughts.

And good randomn thoughts they are! In this instance, however, I think extending the chest unit would impede articulation/movement. Also, I don't think I can extend it and keep it looking right...

Hi Again,
Some interesting variations and adaptations. I like the exo-skeletal finger detail, but then again I also rather like your other 3-fingers-into-gun designs... would it be plausible to try a combo? Maybe have a Cyberman with two opposable thumbs, the hand becoming a gun? Just musing...

I like the way you are playing with design detailing that looks half like a spinal column/bones, half like an armoured cable; it doesn't seem exactly right yet (obviously no offence intended & I certainly couldn't do better - I hate sounding critical and I really do only mean any comments constructively) but anyway the idea is very sound; it also reminds me of both sutures and staples - very nice mechanical/stitching/surgery sub-images suggest themselves.

A possible weak point currently is the "hip" joint; this does look a bit action-figure at present. On the plus side, the design really suggests that the Cyberman has no male genitals beneath the metal; it might sound like a joke to point that out but it actually is quite a good thing in that the Cybermen are a sterile species who reproduce only through Cyberconversion; playing up the sterility in a subtle way works well. But maybe trying something a tad different on how the legs connect might be an idea; currently it looks a tiny bit like dolls legs joining metal bikini bottoms.

I think I liked the longer spinal column reinforcement on some of your earlier ones slightly more - maybe it's just the length - and I may be being over-sensitive due to the hump-backed New Paradigm Daleks!

The elbow & knee joints look interesting... Do you intend to do an animation at some point? I rather like the idea of the joints not necessarily behaving like those of a human e.g. knees that could bend either backwards or forwards, or more of the joints being ball-and-socket rather than hinge type etc. The idea of a Cyberman that can turn its head, arms, waist etc through 360 degrees is quite interesting...

Slight criticism in that I think the neck collar could do with a change - at present it seems a tad too reminiscent of the Sontarans, almost as though it should have a helmet clip on to it somehow.

A couple of random thoughts...

What do you think about adding a bit more of the spinal-column type cable below the chest unit going down toward the groin region? It might look a bit skeletal/spinal, might also look somewhat like a post-autopsy restitch; the effect might generally play up the dead-man-walking motif as well as reinforcing the idea of organs having been removed / replaced etc?

All in all though, it is a great design & I really look forward to seeing what comes next.

PS - I've added a page of your designs on my Cybermantra blog here : [link]

Cheers for putting up my designs! I'm really enjoying browsing through everything you've got up on that blog!

I'm probably not going to do much with the 'three-fingered-gun' hands any time soon. I was never really satisfied with the results and I'm not sure I could make it work with this design. Still, you never know - I might work out a way later.

You're right, the spinal/boney look isn't working yet - but I've made great strides with it overnight, I think, so on the next design, it might be right! I've already got the spine extended and looking better (don't know why that took me so long...) so that's something.

Similarly with the hips - I think I might finally be getting somewhere. I can't get rid of the balljointed look completely - can't do fabrics, drat it - but I'm getting better at hiding it. Still, as you say, there is something right about the 'doll' look with the lower torso... Can't animate, unfortunately - limitations of the program - but the joints certainly have the potential for 360 rotation etc.

I see what you mean about the collar but the idea was to evoke old deep-sea diving suits, as well as the old-style Cybermen's helmet collars. So, I'm probably not going to change it...

As for adding 'stitch-up' marks on the front etc...I'll see. Not sure. I'll have to try it and see what it looks like.

Thanks again for putting my designs on your site and for commenting!

No worries about adding your stuff to the blog, thanks for giving your approval. Glad you like the blog, there's a lot I want to add (when time allows); site navigation is a bit questionable at times (but then blogging software isn't really designed for what I'm doing with this) but hopefully it should turn in to a good resource (apart from anything else it helps organise some of the stuff I have lurking on my hard drives). A lot of the pages get periodic updates so with your own interest in Cyber-designs it might be worth looking at some of these now and again - I've added a lot to the McKinstry & Millenium FX pages in the past day or two, and more fan designs on the alternative Cybermen page - etc.

Yeah, I've been browsing the designs as I work on my own. Really interesting to see how they evolved. Also, I'm very grateful to you for putting up things like Junkyard Demon and the Cyberman Chronicle strips. Been looking for those for ages! Are you going to be able to put up more of the 'Chronicles' following Dead Heart?

Hi again,

With a tiny bit of luck (I have to go through my scans of old issues etc and resize the graphics and so on)) I hope to be able to add scans of just about every Cyberman comic strip that's been published, and ditto text files of every Cyberman novel (Target novelisation,Virgin New Adventure, Missing Adventure, Past Doctor Adventure, Eighth Doctor Adventure etc - though this means reformatting the text first). I won't add anything currently or extremely recently in print (e.g. the IDW recolourised versions, or Big Finish audios etc but I've already put on the old BBV Cyberon stuff now they've stopped trading), and I'll also be adding at least some articles from Dr Who weekly/monthly/magazine & some of the better stuff from a few fanzines etc. I'll be doing the equivalent for the Sontarans on my Sontarantula blog (not quite such a massive task) and the Daleks on my Dalektricity blog (which is a bit of a mammoth job as there is so much on them from the early 60s onward), and in time the Autons, Silurians/Sea-Devils, Zygons & others on separate blogs. Obviously this is going to take a wee while... I think if I stick to out of print stuff I won't run in to too many problems (fingers crossed) but if I were asked to remove anything I have a plan to make the specific page/s private (easy to do with the blogging software options) which means only a logged in user could view it, otherwise it is invisible. This may well never be necessary but if it ever is I'll let you know how to view any hidden pages. Although it is quite a big project in some ways, its fun to do and helps me organise all the stuff I have on my hard drives. In time I'll scan some stuff I only have as hard copy e.g. David Bank's Cyberman book etc.

Anyway, as I've finished doing the TV comic Cyber-stories and I haven't yet started on the missing Sontaran strips (I figure I'll finish the Sontaran & Cyberman comic strips before starting on the rest of the Dalek stuff), and as you've asked, I'll do the post-Deadheart stuff next; so probably they will all be up sometime in the next week, time allowing. If there is *anything* Doctor Who related that it is possible to put in an electronic format that you'd like to get your hands on, let me know, as there's a very good chance I may have it or know where to find it.... I don't know if Deviantart has a PM function (?) but if you want, leave a comment on the blog with your email address (I won't publish the address obviously!)e.g. if you ever want to chat privately.

Certainly an abitious project! I look forward to seeing it develop.

Yeah, dA has a kind of PM function - Notes, if you haven't found it yet. Thanks, I'll get in touch if there's something I'm after.

As I said on the last revision, I love these. I would prefer that they looked a little... denser, but keeping that oh so creepy emaciated feel. I'd also quite like it if the spine extended further down the back of the Cyberman, and if the third 'handlebar' was replaced by some sort of curled tubing, akin to the sort you find hooked up to folks in hospital. In fact, a few more asymettrical pipes, wires and tubes coming from the chest unit and/or spine would be the icing on the cake of a very sexy design. And if it's possible, the joints could look more oily and internal parts-ish.

Librarian-bot In reply to JacOak [2010-07-07 10:50:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm playing about with trying to contrast the dense with the emaciated - altering the size of the exo-skeleton bands, mainly. Seems to be working.

I've also (finally!) twigged how to get that spine to extend further down the back and still allow for movement, so definitely making it longer. I'm probably not going to change the helmet tubes - but can you find a picture of the tubing you mean? I think I know what you're talking about but it'd help if you could show me - might be useful somewhere else...like for that asymmetric piping. Any idea where I should try and put it?

Brilliant. Utterly freakin'...

For some reason I'm really lovin' the shoulders.
Only thing I can think might need a change-up would be the wrists. Even if they're sardine-d corpses you'd want a bit more space for the corpse's wrist to fit through.
Almost the same with the '80's GIJoe hips...

Librarian-bot In reply to Oktanecrow [2010-07-07 10:48:04 +0000 UTC]

Ta.

The wrists don't need to be that thick given that the hands are entirely mechanical. But I see what you mean. Might try and expand them later. And I'm working on improving the hips!
