The Story->- Come in, young man, - the old man  told me with hoarse voice, he kindly let me into the house.
Old wooden floor greeted me sad wheeze when I stepped over the threshold. His house was unremarkable:with dilapidated walls, the slightly failed roof, dirty windows. All the houses in this fishing village were almost like that, but the house looked particularly old. The old man lead me into the hall and offered me to sit on a chair, he sat down on a rocking chair too.
- There are not many guests who visits our town!- Suddenly he said, - What is the reason of your visit? Is it a case of foolishness that is typical for your age?
- No, grandpa, not foolishness. I have been traveling to many places, I'm am listening the legends and stories which are different from place to place. I'm a writer.
- "The writer" you say ... - grandfather approvingly nodded his head. - Well, listen, young man. Now the old man will tell you the legend of our old fishing village.
He scratched his white beard while I was looking for the most comfortable position, sitting on a chair which almost fell apart.
- Our village is as old as the world, my son, and there are different legends that could be told. But I will tell you a special one- he began to sway in his chair the creaking boards were groaning beneath him .
- Once upon a time in these waters people saw a mermaid. Yes, son, mermaid, - he grinned mischievously. - No one knew where she came from, how it looks and what she was doing here. Only occasionally sailors saw her in the distance, but no one could get closer to her. However, all the villagers heard her beautiful singing. For centuries, people have tried to find her, for various reasons: someone wanted fame and fortune; some of them believed that it will fulfill the desire; someone were having other motives, - an old man, cleared his throat, and pushed again from the floor.
- There were legends that by her singing, she invites people , she tries to kidnap them and drag on the seabed, - continued the old man. - And some people said that a beautiful mermaid gives immortality in exchange for the human soul. Around her there was always gloomy rumors. But once one guy apperared in the village who, heard the singing of the mermaid and fell in love with that voice. He did not believe that a mermaid could be dangerous, people avoided him - the old man turned his head to the window and continued the story.
- The guy who has devoted his entire youth to the search of that amphibian he wanted at least one more time to hear her misterious and beautiful voice. For years, he was looking for her, but vainly - the old man took the cigar out of the box that was lying on the table and lit it. - In his old age he was almost blind and decided to go for the last time in search of mermaid. At night, he sat on the boat, and the waves carried him into the sea.Nо one has seen him over again.
- That's all? - I said since was disappointed and indignant.
- Well, some say that this fool died in the sea. Someone says that the mermaid took him to the bottom of the sea. But I know she gave him immortality, and now every day he listens to her song - shaking off the ashes the old man stopped his creaking in chair, and we plunged into complete silence.
- Why are you so sure? - I tried to ask, but the old man interrupted me immediately.
- Tshshshsh ... - he put his finger to his lips. - Do you hear that?
I listened. Thousands of ants ran over the skin, but we still were in absolute silence.
- No, nothing - I said in surprise.
The old man looked at me with his white as snow blind eyes.
- But I hear ...
