To be honest, I didn't have much problem with the AI.
However, in games where you have an AI partner, expecially when it's such a big part of the game, it's always nice to have some influence over it.
For example, have options to choose the way for it to act, along the lines of:
-conserve ammo
-do not use healing items
-do not attack
-attack the enemies far/close
