I have heard of this notorious game...
However, I have never(nor will ever) play it.
''Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing'' is so horrible, that installing it on your PC is like downloading a computer virus... on purpose.
Well, at least it makes some good laughing material, like here:

I know what I am about to post is probably going to sound REALLY weird, especially since the context of my comment has ZERO to do with the game that sparked this work (i never heard of the game, let alone played it...)
yes, I found this to be amusing and cute.
but I also could related to the character as portrayed in this comic, "always winning races, yet never happy"
In my dreams, I am powerful, strong and loved. In my waking life I am sad, pathetic, and empty... lonely.
yet this character as you have portrayed finds determination to fight against the big ugly real world, and finds something that maybe no one else has ever seen.
I know this bit at the end probably had to do with the incompleteness of the game(I've played games where you could go onto the other side of boundary walls and keep going infinitely, or fall of a cliff and keep falling until you reset the game manually.) but going off into that grey void could symbolize "going into the unknown" we human once believed the world was flat, after all.

I dunno. I think Big Rigs is such a spectacular failure it comes around full circle and can't be said to 'fail' anymore...
Thanks, though.

Can Big Rigs even be called a game?
In any case, it's not frustratingly bad (the way something like Superman 64 is), just confusingly so.

It classifies as a game. A game means a Interactive program

Like Microsoft Word? You type things, and words appear.
Or Excel?
It has about as much narrative and goals within the program as Big Rigs does.

The only way this game could have been worse would have been if we learned that the rig was actually hauling a shipment of E.T. games for the Atari 2600.

Lieju In reply to toonbat [2014-03-21 18:52:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, that would explain why the police aren't chasing you, no-one cares about the shipment or want anything to do with it.

Simply put, the best comic strip ever made...
I saw a video of someone showing a somewhat fixed version containing collision detection, partially fixed physics, graphical changes and new cars. It's not complete though.

You know this "game" could be an alpha version of the "real" big rigs over the road racing that was shipped only because:
A: the didnt care anymore
B: Shipping deadlines
C: Some idiot decided to ship it and the idea stuck

racemaster45 In reply to ulcanorox [2013-01-12 02:42:27 +0000 UTC]

Why would anyone bother fixing this game?
It's not like there's a lack of racing-games on the market.
Although, it's probably a great game to study if you're a programmer, to learn from it's mistakes.

I don't know, maybe they're bored or warming up their programming skills?
Also, I think it's been said that the game itself is actually a pre-alpha. I don't really believe it though. Pre-alpha or not, this game definitely blows, and you've perfectly pointed out every single flaw of the game in your comic strip.
Good job BTW.

Well, at least as far as broken games go, it's broken in a hilarious way, and not annoying. Although since it really has no objectives, failing in the game is impossible.

Wow, that game is amazing. I can't help but feel they made all their money back on it after they sold the first copy.
I like how you can go at infinite speeds by reversing but not by going forward.
This is cute though, it's brings back the nostalgia of reading a Thomas the Tank Engine book
There's something I find awesomely adorable about the last shot where he keeps driving off into the vast emptiness before him. I hope he finds something one day.

"Wow, that game is amazing. I can't help but feel they made all their money back on it after they sold the first copy."
Oddly enough, if you want to buy this game, it can be pretty pricey, 50 dollars or so. Although I'm guessing pretty much anyone who played it pirated it, but it is an infamous game.
Also, the boxart for it totally misrepresents it:[link]
and the back of the box claims "You need to evade police to deliver your illegal cargo and fight the cops" which is slightly misrepresenting the game.
"I like how you can go at infinite speeds by reversing but not by going forward."
Of course not. That would be silly.

'Oddly enough, if you want to buy this game, it can be pretty pricey, 50 dollars or so. Although I'm guessing pretty much anyone who played it pirated it, but it is an infamous game.'
Ouch, although I suppose finding working copies of old games tends to be pricey anyway. But that can't be the original retail price, surely? I don't see this being worth much other than pirated. (Unless they realised no one would buy it so they racked up the price to try and get any money back with it)
'and the back of the box claims "You need to evade police to deliver your illegal cargo and fight the cops" which is slightly misrepresenting the game.'
It's wonderful when companies do that, like the tutorial mentioning 'there is a car on the loading screen, but their are no cars in the entire game'. Unless you pretend the other AI truck is being driven by the police... while they're on their coffee break
'Of course not. That would be silly.'
Makes parrallel parking five times more hazardous.

"Ouch, although I suppose finding working copies of old games tends to be pricey anyway. But that can't be the original retail price, surely?"
I don't know. The source where I got it from (a review of the game I didn't manage to find again) said it was much more expensive than most older games. I suppose there wasn't a huge number of physical copies, but I find it difficult to believe there would be a big demand for it.
"Unless you pretend the other AI truck is being driven by the police... while they're on their coffee break"
Or if you pretend you live in the future and already were caught by the police who now have trapped you into virtual reality where they will observe your behaviour to determine the punishment. If you break the speed limit or drive off the road, you will be judged accordingly.
"Makes parrallel parking five times more hazardous."
Not really, since you can just drive through everyone else.

'If you break the speed limit or drive off the road, you will be judged accordingly.'
But there's nothing else to do in that game! (Unless they rate you on trying to crash into walls and smash up the surronding area.
'Not really, since you can just drive through everyone else.'
That could mean that you could just park the car wherever then (screw driving lessons) although surely owning a reality phasing car could cause massive disruption to the space time continuim

That's why it's a test. They make it very easy and tempting for you to break the law without any apparent consequences, it's a true test of character and conscience.
This is a deep game, man.

oh my word when the truck spun round backwards in the last video I half-expected it to break a hole in the universe in a very corny 60s fashion with a mandatory alien invasion!
It can indeed only be described as "hilariously bad".

"oh my word when the truck spun round backwards in the last video I half-expected it to break a hole in the universe in a very corny 60s fashion with a mandatory alien invasion!"
It caused a rift in the space-time continuum, certainly.
And there definitely were aliens, they were just all invisible, silent, and lacked collision detection.
