Personality:
+ Loyal / Responsible / Attentive
= Realist / Patient / Curious / Polite / Mother-hen
- Vengeful / Stubborn / Indecisive
Cyrilean at her core is a kind and empathetic person, feeling the pain and happiness of others acutely. Though she doesn’t always put forth an effort to support a person who needs it if she doesn’t know them well, a protective, mother-hen instinct may unexpectedly take her over at any point. As such, she may find herself unable to ignore someone’s plight, potentially taking them under her wing in whatever way she can, even if it’s just to talk over tea every once-in-a-while. Though she isn’t quick to trust, those who have gained her respect and loyalty are hard-pressed to lose it, and she will do what she can for them. Responsible and attentive, she carries out her tasks with sharp-minded grace, and often takes the initiative in uncertain situations.
While dealing with her siblings, a pessimist and an optimist, she has found her place in the middle as a complete realist; she can sometimes be frustrated when people don’t consider the facts and misinterpret a situation, whether that is positive or negative. Despite that, she is still a patient woman, willing to listen to what others have to say and help mediate a problem if need be. Curious to a fault, her eyes and ears are always open to what is happening around her, seeking to know more if needed, but seeks to be polite about it. Sometimes in her efforts to be polite, she may accidentally come off as aloof and cold, even if that isn’t how she really is.
A blessing and a curse, Cyrilean has been shown to be stubborn to a fault, disliking changing her mind or decision once it has been made, even if it’s wrong, partially because she can also be indecisive. Though often she’s forced to, she prefers not to be quick with her choices and would rather think things through. She’s also keenly aware of the fact that she is conventionally beautiful, and though she wouldn’t be described as vain, she’s not above using this fact to her advantage. Many guarded secrets and closed-door dealings fell directly into her lap through a few well-placed compliments and whispered caresses. She takes no pleasure in the deception and manipulation, but understands that it’s a very useful tool in her arsenal as it has helped immensely on her revenge quest against those that tore her family apart.

History:
Tl;dr: Sonia is of mixed birth and grew up in a loving family. It took her a little longer than her siblings to find her calling, but she found it as a dancer when a travelling performance troupe set-up shop in her village. That’s where she met her best friend Florian (now passed), and spurred the start of her career. As the war worsened, her training leaned toward espionage and information gathering until her village was attacked, her best friend killed, and her family broken. Resolving to find her brother and father, she left her sister and mother behind to be cared for in Hoshido, and travelled to Nohr where she now reluctantly serves in the army.
PRE-BIRTH
Fifteen years before Sonia’s birth, her father, Garrett, was deployed on a mission to help guard an important trading hub against a recent outlaw problem. Situated within the town center of a reasonably sized village on the border between Nohr and Hoshido, the biannual trade bazaar grew in size and grandeur each time it occurred, requiring more and more protection. While there, the then Nohrian knight in training met a young Hoshidan apothecary completing her studies named Aikiko. After an effective poultice for a previously annoying skin condition, the two traded stories from their professions and everyday lives, becoming fast friends over the course of the week.
On the final day, Garrett made the mistake of relaxing his guard while on duty, naively thinking that there would be no trouble. Unfortunately, a group of outlaws chose that day to attack, catching the two teenagers in the middle of a meal. A scuffle ensued, the two barely managing to escape injury with a bit of ingenuity, teamwork, and well placed dishware, and the attack was soon quelled by the actions of the full defense force throughout the city. Garrett had sustained minor injuries, but Aikiko was right there with her full stock of medicines to patch him up—all for free.
Each time the bazaar occurred, Garrett and Aikiko would return and meet, even as the both of them completed their training regimes and became full-fledged professionals in their fields. Finally, Garrett stopped leaving the village altogether, and they settled into a home on the edge of the town backed by gardens and forests. Ten years before Sonia’s birth, the two married, starting a successful business together selling medicines and sword lessons. Three years before her birth, the couple’s eldest child, and Sonia’s older brother, Hitoshi was born. Five years after her birth, the youngest child, Sonia’s younger sister, Anwen was born, completing the family.
EARLY LIFE
Her daily life was ordinary, growing up surrounded by loving family and friendly neighbours. Everyone knew and helped one another so that no one was ever in need. Through this help, the children decided early on what they wanted to do in life. While her older brother decided to pursue the same path as their father, and her younger sister their mother, Sonia never truly felt like she belonged in either group. She found direct combat too violent and uncomfortable, while the healing arts failed to keep her attention for any longer than it took to learn the basics.
Feeling a self-imposed pressure to find a calling, despite her young age of 11, she turned to trying out everything she could in the village. From baking to archery, nothing escaped her efforts, but all failed to keep her. Frustrated with the lack of progress, she fell into a state of disinterest and boredom, settling for a simple life of helping around the house and assisting her mother.
Both her parents knew that this simple life would not work for her, so they each tried to come up with their own ideas on how to stimulate their eldest daughter into finding something that clicked. All failed until the day a travelling entertainment troupe arrived at their village, regaling the residents with masterful ballads, colorful costumes, and complex dances. Thinking that there was nothing to be lost from it, the family went together to see a performance.
It was at this performance that Sonia’s life was changed forever.
Enraptured with the movements and splendor of these artists, Sonia couldn’t get it out of her head, going back again and again just to hear the music and see the way they moved. This didn’t escape the notice of both Garrett and Aikiko, who had a long and serious conversation with their daughter. They were willing to let her go with them, should she wish it, to pursue the calling that she had so obviously found. Sonia had no desire to leave her family and village behind, but the seed had been planted, and she couldn’t ignore it. At that point, it was decided that they would approach the troupe with the intention for Sonia to join and learn.
As luck would have it, the apprehension was unnecessary. This was the troupe’s final stop, final performance before they planned to go their separate ways, and a few had already decided to settle in the village and open a small studio for interested learners on both sides of the border. Sonia wouldn’t have to leave her village after all.
PRODIGY
Entering the studio, she found fast-friends in both her soon to be instructor, and also current students. One in particular, an aspiring poet named Florian, clicked with her well, and the two quickly grew inseparable. Sonia spent almost every day at the studio for years, learning all she could about the performing arts. It was her home, just as much as her first home was, and the place where she felt as if she belonged. By the time she turned 25, she was the best student that the studio had ever trained.
Performance was certainly not all that was covered. As a way to serve the town in a way that wasn’t just entertainment, combat was also taught as a supporting role. Realistically, how the performers could assist on the battlefield was more important than the actual fighting itself, and seeing how the martial arts didn’t sit very well with Sonia, this compromise suited her just fine. Despite her dislike for combat, she could still help her family and the village defenders with her inspiring dance, imparting morale and skill in each battle she participated in. This role, to her, was more than enough.
CONFLICT STIRS
As the war continued to worsen, tensions continued to rise in the city. Long-time friends grew increasingly suspicious of the activities of the others and questions rose about where someone’s “true loyalties lay.” Sonia’s family, like many other mixed-race families felt the fear that came with this uncertainty. Could they be neutral, or would they have to take a side? If they had to take a side, would that pit them against their own family? Sonia found herself constantly being interrogated by Nohrian, Hoshidan, and even some of her more decisive mixed friends on which side she would take. Unable to imagine ever picking one part of her over the other, she consistently declared herself as neutral. Unable to accept that as an answer, she watched as what used to be a tight-knit group of friends, slowly drift apart. To make things worse, drifting apart became the least of her worries when heated discussions became arguments, and arguments became fights.
Sonia often tried to avoid this conflict, throwing her attention full-heartedly into honing her craft and staying away from home where arguably, tension was the highest. Her father sympathized with the Nohrian monarchy, and although she knew he would put family first, that fact put him at odds with her brother, a Hoshidan sympathizer. The two fought often over “what-ifs” and drained the energy of her sister and mother as the two tried to keep the peace. This conflict eroded at her mother’s already fragile health, and as she grew weaker, the fighting grew stronger, worrying for the matriarch exacerbating an already tense situation. Unwilling to face these issues at home, she didn’t, instead observing what was happening in the village and gathering information about the areas around it as she dove further into her dancer’s training. She may have chosen to stay away from the issue, but she refused to be ignorant to it.
Away from prying eyes, the studio offered a hidden, darker agenda; they established themselves as a piece in the network of spies and informants that spanned the continent. This early on, people had no reason to suspect that dancers, singers, and acrobats would garner any negative attention, and their professions would make it easy to slip-in behind a target’s guard. Sonia was quickly taught that anything and everything could be a weapon, and to not let pride get in the way of an opportunity. She excelled in this manner, and her honeyed words and sultry moves quickly won her many notes that would prove useful.
Florian was not as enthused about the new training regimen. Having honed his craft as a bard of decent renown, he did just as well as Sonia in their new profession. However, the deception worried him. He worried that they would be found out, or a client may take things too far. Sonia worried too, but if only for his sake, she put on the mask of confidence that she herself really didn’t feel. He was not convinced, but not being able to do anything short of leaving everything behind, the two simply vowed to be real and frank to each other, even if the world they knew transformed into something unrecognizable. To them, that would have to be enough.
WAR AT HOME
The day that Sonia knew the war truly began for her, was the day when Nohrian troops swept into her village. She, her mother, and her sister were away at the time, gathering herbs deep in the forest behind the village. Sonia was the first to hear the faint sounds of conflict, desiring to return but being held back by Aikiko. There, they waited in fear until sunset, only to find that every able-bodied fighter had been hauled away, or went missing in the struggle. From asking around, they found out that this included Garett—who was simply missing—and Hitoshi—who had been forcefully conscripted. This shock proved too much for the weakened system of their mother, who fell ill. Anwen, distraught and distracted, couldn’t stop Sonia when she decided to run through the village, searching and praying that some semblance of her home-away-from-home had survived, that this was all a bad dream that she would soon awake from. However, when she laid eyes on the smoldering ruin of the studio, the fluttering pages of music and choreography, and a familiar bloodstained notebook, she knew that it wasn’t. She knew what had come to pass: her brother and father were gone, and her best friend of almost two decades was dead. Unable to cope, she scribbled a hurried note to Anwen, trusting the girl to do what was needed, packed-up, and left with revenge on the mind, and a need to mend what was broken.
Once alone and miles away from home, Sonia found herself questioning her decisions. Was it truly a good decision to go? Would she even make it out there for the first time on her own? Was it even worth it? A good week went by as she puzzled over these inquiries and their answers before finally coming to a satisfactory conclusion. It was a good decision—good enough anyway, she would be fine, and yes, it was worth it.
Soon after, it didn’t take long for Sonia to decide that the best method for figuring out what happened to her family and to take her revenge was to travel to Nohr and join the army. She was confident that her sister and mother would be taken care of in Hoshido, and having discovered that the information network still had active houses all over the continent, it was worth the risk to infiltrate. Leaving “Sonia” behind, she adopted the name “Cyrilean” for both life and stage, and jumped from travelling band to band, providing entertainment and polite company as they moved towards the capital. Fearing that she would be recognized and given-away by former friends, she had her hair and eyes altered by a magician, and took to wearing a veil for the majority of time. For her goal, she was ready to do whatever it took.

My writing length varies, but I have written longer messages in the past (500+ words), so I usually prefer a medium that is less cumbersome to write in. Headcanons are welcome and I enjoy shipping. However, I get attached to ships, so I’d want it to be a longer term thing.
