Adrian Smith - the unsung hero of Maiden! Like the colours on this one

Yep, I think both Dave and Adrian are pretty unsung as far as guitar heroes go and they've been so hugely influential on so many bands

Do you have a big enough runway to land Ed-Force One?
Have you seen them live?

Steve Harris's side project band British Lion are playing my local town this summer but alas I'm working so unable to attend which sucks

Appreciate the fav too mate

I have not seen Iron Maiden live, unfortunately... They never come to Minnesota, and I'm pretty sure it's been decades since they last came here! The closest they ever got to Minnesota was a rock festival in Wisconsin, which was a day's drive away. It kinda sucks to live here, really, since not a whole lot of good bands come here.Β

Damn that kind of sucks mate! I guess I'm lucky in England that I'm never more than a half day travelling away from all corners. Saying that though I haven't seen maiden since 1986 so I really don't have the excuse that you have

Yeah, to say that the U.S. of A is a gigantic country would be an understatement. I happen to live 25 minutes outside the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis-St. Paul). It could take a whole week to get from Minneapolis to New York by car.Β

Yeh and it'd probably cost you less in fuel than it would for me to travel anywhere in the UK

BallPythonMetal In reply to Life-takers-crayons [2015-07-26 02:25:06 +0000 UTC]

That too, although gas might be way more expensive over in the UK than in the US. I thought that's what I heard.Β

Yeah it is, runs at about 70% tax so the government are raking it in and shoving up the price of produce and goods! Last year they actually dropped the fuel prices(well there was an election coming up!!) and strangely people started to buy more goods as prices fell across the board. They are slowly creeping back up They want an upturn in the economy(albeit a short one so it looks good to secure votes) but don't want to lose their little money spinner

Yeah but you have all those classic and darn sexy V8's and so on and they drink fuel faster than a drunk on pay day...so you're right to complain

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BallPythonMetal In reply to Life-takers-crayons [2015-07-26 20:59:07 +0000 UTC]

They may be sexy, but they're contributing to climate change, like pretty much every car is. V8's more so than others.

I think even some of the eco friendly cars and hybrids add to carbon foot prints as the parts have to sail from all corners of the globe before they are assembled

True. That never occurred to me. Until we've come up with more eco-friendly ways of shipping things, I might reconsider buying Magnum CD's off eBay. They're incredibly rare in the US.Β

Blimey Magnum! There's a band I've not heard for years!! Still on the go and releasing albums though, could have been big early to mid 80's but it never happened to them for some reason( I imagine the usual, bad management screwing them over and booking dire gigs or a poor record label not promoting them enough or forcing them to release inferior bandwagon jumping albums because that style was trending at the moment) An ex girlfriend was in to them and they played a local venue many years ago, Tony"the hat" Clarkin was in the local hotel bar having a beer when I went in with a bunch of mates. I gather now he's quit the drink as it was getting a problem for him

Wow! I never thought I'd actually come in contact with someone who's (maybe) come in contact with a member of that band! I don't think they've ever toured in the US, but I could be wrong. I've never met anybody in the US that's ever heard of them, so I'm pretty sure I'm one of only a small percentage of people here that appreciates them.Β

Life-takers-crayons In reply to BallPythonMetal [2015-07-30 08:16:14 +0000 UTC]

Well like I said my ex was in to them, they weren't totally my cup of tea but they are a band I listen to from time to time and I've kind of forgotten how good they were! I'm sure they toured the USA, it was the mecca for UK bands to break the big US market. If they didn't headline they must have supported a bigger name, Story Tellers Night and Vigilante were big hits in the 80's to have not toured America would have been business suicide! Granted things had taken a down turn in the 90's hence why they were playing my local town(Saxon played a couple of gigs around the same time) It is said you play it twice, once on your way up and again on your way down........Maiden and Priest played in 1980....just waiting for their return
I do remember watching Magnum on national TV in the mid 80's. We had a TV show called ECT, it was a hard rock and metal show on national TV on a Friday at 6pm!!!!!! Crazy now to think they did that!! All the bands did about 3 or 4 songs and played live! No lip sync crap!! Loads of big names Β and big names in waiting played on it and some who fell by the wayside over the years.....I remember watching Venom whilst eating my dinner! Seems so surreal now and they wouldn't do it now! Here's a clip of MagnumΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA3iME…

Live with no lip-syncing; that's the way to do it. Β Real musicians, real music, real talent. Nowadays we just got talentless hacks twerking and lip-syncing and whatnot. There's also the infamous Hatsune Miku that's been insanely popular, especially on DA. Don't know what that is? Don't google it. If you do know what it is, you know all too well of how far low humanity has stooped in the name of style over substance.

I know I know Those crazy Japanese I can understand using something like that in a theatre play where the special effects could enhance a performance but to me it's not a concert and despite the band being"live" it's not a true concert experience. Basically you're cheering and paying to see a hologram!!?? WTF I'm guessing that the live band are just hired session guys who aren't big names or crowd pullers! I can see kids going crazy for this as they know no different but with all these Japanese manga/anime style stuff it has a huge adult following! I blame those Elvis hologram shows a few years back! What was the point? Even though it did feature his actual band playing live to tapes and a moving image of the king it was still....erm, not the king performing live. Β I'd rather watch the 68 comeback show than pay to watch binary!
I find it even more shocking that more and more rock bands are using backing tapes! I don't mind intro tapes or voice overs but when you can clearly hear a second guitar(looking at you Motley Crue, actually doesn't Mick Mars look like Alice Coopers Grand father now ) Or Coverdale having to rebuke claims he mimes when evidence exists of vocals carrying on even when the mic has been moved away from his mouth. Also naff band Ill Nino got in to hot water with the ex guitarist as their new guitarist mimes on stage on an acoustic guitar to acoustic segments recorded by the old guitarist!! WHY!!!? I just don't get it and please don't get me started on that Lip Sync Battle TV show!!!

On vinyl!!!

When I was growing up my best friend's older brother had Powerslave and Bark at the Moon and Screaming for Vengeance on vinyl at his house. I used to stare at those covers for hours, man.

Well, maybe not Ozzy. That cover was fugly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Life-takers-crayons In reply to jetdog-art [2015-07-24 17:58:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes still have them too! Have Screaming For Vengeance and Bark at the moon( again purchased them when the came out) Back in the days when album art was just as important as the music inside, and big enough to see all the details!! Powerslave is so detailed, you miss so much on a CD booklet, but Life After Death was my favourite, gatefold so you could open up the scene! And the rocket strapped Eagle on Priest album was awesome to kid like me!! Vengeance came with a poster of it which duly went on my wall along with the Y&T Mean Streak snake!
Yep Ozzy all covered in werewolf fur wasn't a pretty sight, I recall buying the So Tired ep, had live tracks on the b-side with Jake E Lee doing his solo on Suicide Solution. I went to see him later on that tour and those live tracks were like teasing a kid before Christmas by showing him his gifts and then hiding them away!! Also saw Van Halen that year and ...well oh dear......I know people rave over them but I just couldn't get on with Roth, the rest of the guys had real talent he just seemed to stand on stage shooting his mouth off
And lets not forget the Scorpions album art.....always a bit of titilation before you were able to blag a copy of Playboy

jetdog-art In reply to Life-takers-crayons [2015-07-24 18:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh man now I totally remember the Live After Death art . So awesome.

Yeah, I loved the Vengeance and the Defenders of the Faith covers for Priest. I had no idea there was a poster!

I liked Roth, but I get the feeling I wouldn't want to hang out with him. His crazy and mine would not mix. I tried to read his book and it's like having a conversation with someone with severe ADHD and a lifetime supply of candy.

Come on over sometime and we'll have an 80s metal party. Bring your vinyl. Β And a record player.
