Description I have been waiting for so long to submit this, finally got my photo from PCA.

My silver-place-getting entry into the 2009 Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards - Brief H.

The brief was to create a beer or wine leisure pack that utilised PET for the primary packaging and B-Flute carton board for the secondary packaging. Constraints for the wine brief include an age range of 18 to 28 years old and the need for each of four bottles to hold 500ml.
Reduction of environmental impact, thorough investigation of materials and promotion of responsible consumption of alcohol were all considered.

The product is ideally suited for all manner of outdoor leisure activities where wine may be consumed. Each unit contains four 500ml bottles, each with its own two cups. Though they could be sold individually, the secondary packaging of the four pack enhances the overall experience by doubling as a cup and bottle holding tray. It is fully re-closable and can hold a variety of vessels up to the size of a milk carton and including beer bottles, soft drink bottles and cans. There is a handle die cut into the back face of the box which allows it to be comfortably carried at one's side while walking. The minimal wasted internal space and simple, robust shape also allow it to fit easily in back packs or stacked into large shipper cartons. The entire package uses only two inks and no glue points. It is held together by folds, tabs, tongues and friction alone (but is still very sturdy, even when open).
The bottles are intended to be not only recyclable but very reusable. Two cups click in place on the top and bottom of the bottle allowing the contents to be easily shared. The top is a Stelvin aluminium wine bottle closure but the thread will also accept standard PET soft drink bottle tops. The bottles would be made out of DiamondClear PET; more rigid and glossy than standard PET as well as better suited to long term win storage. It also maintains the full recyclability of regular PET.

I primarily focused my attention on the physical function of the bottles, cups and carton (all of my own original design) as it was felt that a wide range of brands and graphics could be applied to this concept. The Blockers brand and graphics are inspired by the name and windy nature of a road where the fictional winery would be located.

Blockers would be available in a variety of wines that ranged in sweetness and body. Graphics include advise on taste and consumption for younger drinkers who aren't used to drinking wine.

Although I did not take this image my self, it was supplied to me as a prize for my success in the competition so is considered to be mine to use at my discretion. I have touched up a few things in Photoshop as well as making the cups on the right hand bottle appear transparent (in reality, the whole mock up is milled from a single piece of black acetal.

Thanks go to:
Ned - for the awesome machined acetal bottles.
Cherise Conrick - my packaging teacher and AGDA SA president.
John Leak, Alcan Australia - for the box of Stelvin caps and advice.
My printer - for letting me print on 1100mm long strips of cheap Kraft paper.

Cheers. Although I'm still happy with the result and it got me a job, I would do this so differently now.

Go to Teds and Diamonds at the top of Rundle street and ask for a price. Then walk over to Photographic Wholesalers on Hutt street and ask them how much. If they're not cheapest, tell them the best price you have found so far and they'll probably beat or match it. If not, buy from who ever was cheapest.

On the topic of photography, would you mind if I borrowed your 50mm again tomorrow? Same deal as before, won't leave the house, only this time it's my wine bottles which need shooting.

It's an amazing concept!

You should make an offer to some new wineries.

Thanks, I've had a few people say that. I would want to refine the design a little more though. This is the about the 6th major revision and the second graphic version of this package layout

People keep saying that cause we know you'd be awesome at that.

Well, refining the design and all is good. But what if you got the input of a wine producer? They may have some ideas that you'd never have considered.

A good point. I'd actually like to show it to Gavin, my contact at Fusion. He is very much into brand positioning although hasn't recently produced any packaging.

Hahaha.. No. I just want a ride in your personal jet.
