Description Yes, I'm giving all Zutarians a little break. This time, I'm taking aim at my own OTP for Avatar: Kataang.

Comments are turned on since I see no reason for any Zutarians to get upset.

The true shipper can weather all storms. The true shipper can look objectively at their own favorite pairing. And, most importantly, the true shipper can laugh at themselves and their pairing.

Plus, the return of Sokka the Shrink! (Damn, that beard was hard to draw!) And I still can't draw messy hair with Paint.

Okay, I lied, I DO want Zutarians to see this pic. I want them to learn a little something about bashing. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Zutarians say that Kataang can't work because it's pedophilia or incest when IT IS NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS!

Pedophilia is when an adult loves a child, or the other way around. Since neither Aang nor Katara are adults, Kataang is NOT Pedophilia.

Incest is when two blood-related people engage in sexual intercourse. Since Aang and Katara aren't blood-related, it's NOT incest.

I'd be much happier if they bashed Kataang with something that is actually true, like I've done. For the clueless:

An Oedipus Complex is a Fruedian physcological condition that has two parts. The first part says that it is when a young boy becomes fixated on their mother and competes with their father for the mother's affection. (Basically, the first woman a boy ever falls in love with is their mother.) The second part is that a man is likely to fall in love with someone who is like their mother.

It comes from the Greek King named Oedipus who unknowingly murdered his father and married his mother. (I've read the epic play "Oedipus Rex" for High School. Whoo boy, is it disturbing! I mean, not only does he marry his mother, but he has kids with her! Of course, the story has a tragic ending. When Oedipus found out what he had done, he blinds himself and his mother/wife hangs herself.)

I think this is an accurate bashing of the Kataang relationship since Katara does treat Aang like a son, and yet he still develops feelings for her despite (or maybe because of) that.

So, Zutarians are more than welcome to bash Kataang by saying that Aang has an Oedipus Complex, since he really does.

Lol, the entire "shipping war" just amuses me, nothing else. Kataang happened; it's the truth, the finale and a fact-- end of story! Those crack-shippers accusing Bryke of writing Avatar incorrectly, can't be actual Avatards!

Whether or not you accept Kataang.. it's a hard fact. But I wouldn't rather it any other way!

I'm a total Kataang shipper. I just wanted to teach the anti-Kataang shippers how bashing is done. Not by making stuff up (like Kataang being incest. Who came up with that?!) but by pointing out true stuff.

And that is an excellent thing. I thought your picture was really humorous, and liked the different perspective on it. I agree so much- people making things up to fit into their own twisted opinions of the shipping drives me nuts. Smart of you to point out the true ideas with Kataang.

I personally LOVE to read in depth every (and there are so many) Kataang moments, as well as the pictures that commemorate that! This pic was great though! Long live Kataang! <33

i love that you turned on comments because you figured zutarians wouldn't get upset....and then a kataanger gets upset instead. lmao.

i'm a zutarian, and i have to say i LOVE your strips making fun of zutara, as well as this one its all so true about how zutarians are insane and we all pay way too much attention to coincedences!

i was really disappointed that you were forced to turn off comments on your anti-zutara strips because people flamed you that badly. that is simply ridiculous. every ship has its funny, corny points...and zutara is one of the easiest to tease. so why does that have to mean that the person teasing it needs to be hazed?

seeeeee, fellow zutarians? its possible to be a sane human being when discussing pairings between CARTOON CHARACTERS! so chill out and get a life already.

haha, sorry for the long comment that hasn't got much to do with your comic...anyways, i like this one and the other ones awesome work!

Thanks. You are totally awesome.

I've always believed that if you can't laugh at your own ship, then you are not a true shipper. And I also believe there is no shame in shipping crack. I also ship Drill/Wall. And, heck, that one is just full of hilarity, and one of the crackiest ships that you'll find...

for having a good sense of humor.

haha drill/wall? seriously? that's awesome hahaha.

and another thing i noticed while going through your stuff- i had no idea that zutarians noticed the heart shapes that zuko and katara made while they were fighting in the season 2 finale. like...really, people? REALLY?

people are just ridiculous haha why would bryke devote an entire show to subtle hints and a romance that is almost completely overshadowed by an entirely more obvious pairing? Avatar is dominantly the story of Aang becoming a fully realised Avatar- it would be way too much work to follow that storyline as well as implant all of the ridiculous hints at zutara that people are convinced exist throughout the show. its simply not true, and i think that a lot of zutarians are under the illusion that somehow an Avatar special will come out in which it is revealed that the whole show was actually dedicated to zutara...but...no.

kataang wins, people. sorry to tell you.

i have accepted this fact and continue to drool over zutara goodness anyway because it is suchhhhhh goodness!

And, believe me, I have no problem with people drooling over Zutara.

The only time I have a problem with Zutarians (and I admit these people are the minority) are when they insult me for being a Kataanger. That's just... not necessary.

Besides, it's much more fun to fangirl then to bash people who disagree with you.

And, yes, I'm serious about Drill/Wall... [link] LOL

Aang and Katara were an obvious pairing from the first episode, but showing them getting together at those ages (12 and 14) was a terrible move.

All they had to do was add a simple "5 years later" cutscene, show Aang returning to Katara and friends having mastered all of the elements, and *then* have them hook up. Much like Roku was interested in a woman but didn't get with her until after he'd finished his training.

At 12, Aang is prepubescent. At 14, Katara is very much pubescent (never mind that girls start puberty years before boys to begin with, so it's even more of a gap at that age). We're talking about a high schooler making out with a 7th grader, folks.

You can "ship" all you like, but be reasonable. Grab someone who hasn't seen the show, show them the makeout scene, tell them it's a 7th grade boy with a high school girl, and see how many think it's romantic versus (at the very least) weird.

They should have shown them hooking up when they were both older.

LightEcoSage1 In reply to rajb1037 [2010-01-15 17:24:13 +0000 UTC]

I have a really quick question out of pure curiosity. How old are you?

You seem to be in the camp that says Aang and Katara can't be together because of their age. There are so many reasons why this is not true that it's not even funny.

#1: Boys start puberty around 10 years old, and girls start around 9. (Of course it's different for every, but these ages seem to be typical).

#2: Aang is all ready well-underway puberty. His voice even starts to change in the show. This shows that he's hit the second stage of puberty.

#3: Twelve year old boys are capible (HIGHLY capible) of showing interest in girls. I have one twelve year old cousin who is definately starting to get interested in girls. You should have seen him blushing when my family stopped by Victoria's Secret on my birthday. And I have another cousin who isn't even twelve who all ready has a girlfriend.

#4: Twelve years old is about the age that a boy's body starts to 'really' work, if you get my meaning. Not only are they capible of having thoughts about girls, but their bodys are now able to react to those thoughts.

#5: Both Aang and Katara are considered adults. (Yes, I realize that this one is stretching a little) Katara's only two years away from being allowed to get married. And don't forget the Ice Dodging. Both Aang and Katara participated in this Water Tribe coming of Age ritual. And they passed alongside Sokka. According to this ritual, Aang would now be considered a man in the Water Tribe. And, perhaps, the most obvious of all: Aang's clothing in the Finale. Bryke didn't just make those clothes that way because they wanted to or Aang's outfit was destroyed. In the commentary about Aang's clothes, they said, basically, that they wanted him to be dressed in the style of an Air Nomad adult rather than a child to show his maturity. Bryke considers Aang to be an adult.

#6: Age is relative. Where I live in the United States, I often see parents who baby their nearly grown children. This results in children who fail to launch and end up living in their parent's basements when they are thirty. But most of the characters grew up in a war-torn world, and were forced to mature beyond their ages. Katara was forced to grow up and assume motherly duties around 8 years old. Sokka was forced to grow up and assume the responisbilites of being his tribe's only warrior at 12. And Aang only had a few months to accept the reality of his new situation. Ironically, I think the least mature person of the group is also the oldest. Zuko. Especially at the beginning, he came off to me as a child. "I want! I want! I want! And I don't care who gets hurt!" No, I'm not saying he can never mature. He started on the road to maturity in the final season. But he's still got a long way to go.

#7: A two year age difference is, literally, nothing in the big sceme of things. Especially for two children who never grew up in a school system like the ones we grew up with where you were put into classes according to your age, and you never really had much of a chance to interact with those above and below you. You pull out the school metaphor, but the fact is... they are NOT in middle school and High school. During Aang's flashback, it clearly showed that he had friends both younger and older than he was. And, Katara... well... Aang's probably the first boy she had ever seen who was even close to being her age and not her brother. Back to the age difference. I can't stress how much I think that age differences are nothing to worry about. People with age differences, even vast age differences, can meet, fall in love, and live a happy life. My aunt and uncle, for example, are about 13 years apart. To put that into perspective, that would be like Aang falling in love with Hope.

#8: Love knows no age. You said it yourself: "All they had to do was add a simple '5 years later' cutscene..." So my question is: why is the thought of 17 year old Aang dating a 19 year old Katara acceptable, but not 12/13 year old Aang dating a 14 year old Katara? People don't choose who they fall in love with. If people could choose, there would probably be no such thing as homosexuality, bisexuality, or zoosexuality. But there is, and if you ask anyone from the above groups why they love who they love, they will probably say "I love him/her/it. It's as simple as that." Who am I to be accepting of homosexuality, bisexuality, and zoosexuality, and yet say that two kids who are in love with each other can't date?

You're accusing me of not being reasonable, but the fact is, I am VERY reasonable. I just listed 8 reasons why I love Kataang, and I could have more, excpet I gotta go to class.

rajb1037 In reply to LightEcoSage1 [2010-04-14 10:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Wow, hey, so sorry that I didn't respond to this earlier. I don't usually log in when browsing DeviantArt, and so I didn't see this message until just now. I'll see if Deviant has some sort of "email notifications" option or something.

I'm 27, 28 in a few days. I've also worked in psych for years, so I suppose my perspective is completely different on this.

I just want to clarify, again, that I have nothing against the pairing, just how they chose to show it.

In response to your points, though:

1. Boys actually start puberty MUCH later than girls. 2-3 years later, in fact. It also takes much longer to run its course. While a girl will hit sexual maturity about 4 years after puberty starts, boys take anywhere from 6-8 years. So they start 2 years later, and it lasts twice as long. Not to get too graphic, but a male's testicles often don't finish growing until they're almost 20! Most men also don't have full facial (and, uh.. other) hair growth until their early-20's. So a 12-year old boy is actually about 5-6 years behind a 14-year old girl in terms of sexual maturity. That's pretty huge.

2. 12 is the *minimum* 'normal' age of onset of puberty for boys. Besides, Aang still looks entirely boyish at the end of Season 3, which is much more telling than vocal changes. Where's the facial hair? Body shape changes? Etc.?

3. I remember being "interested in" girls at 12. That basically only meant breasts and that I actually talked to them once in a while, instead of just chasing them in the yard.

4. Not quite. I don't want to keep arguing physiology, but I do have 6 years worth of clinical nursing and psych experience (and before that, education) on this. Not to mention the first-hand experience being male, heh.

5. Clothing and rituals do not make someone an adult. No court in the world would ever try a 12-year old as an adult, and they have *never* had adult privileges. Even in ancient and medieval times, 15 or 16 was the point where a male was considered an adult and granted titles, allowed to rule in their own right, etc..

6. Come on, now. Don't tunnel-vision. This same group of adolescents you're talking about make fart jokes, engage in fits/tantrums, and so on. I'll grant that they have some mature personality traits, but a mature personality won't make the body grow any faster.

7. But your aunt wasn't 26 and your uncle wasn't 13, were they? Age differences don't matter once everyone is an adult, but become increasingly important the younger you get. Look, I've.. err.. 'been with' women 20 years older than I am. I understand your point. But at that age, a 2-year age gap DOES matter, especially when the girl is nearly finished with puberty and the boy is just barely starting.

8. I have a lot of gay friends. And lesbian friends. Zoosexuality isn't accepted in any part of the world, though, so that was an odd example! Anyway, "love" is the same excuse pedophiles and wife-beaters use. Love is a strong emotion, but it's very, very often wrong. We love people and things that we shouldn't; that's a fact of life. Your profile has you listed as being 20. Don't be so naive and girly about love, ya dork.

One of my favorite patients was an 18-year old girl who had been raped by her otherwise loving father for years and years. The fact that he loved her was what made it so devastating. It even messed with *my* mind. Part of the reason I adored her so much was because she was so polite, sweet, well-mannered... all things her father had taught her!

I get your point, but I still maintain that they should have cut forward a few years. Would you have been any less happy? Seriously, it's not like you'd have said.. "THAT SUCKS! How dare they make them both young adults instead of children. I wanted to see children making out!" I'd imagine that the outcome you wanted was just seeing them get together, regardless of age.

I know it's easy to take these sort of things personally, but when I say it's wrong for them to show a 12/14 year old make out, I'm not saying it's wrong for you to want them to get together. You don't have to defend something that is, at the very least, 'iffy', just because you wanted them to be a couple. They could have been a couple a few years later, too, and we'd *both* have been happy. Am I wrong?

On an unrelated note, the second trailer for the movie looks amazing.

Maybe you were just "interested" in girls back then, but I caught my friend's eleven-year-old brother drooling over porn two years ago. No way am I believing all little boys are the same in THAT!
Anyway, I didn't start puberty UNTIL I was fourteen, and I'm a girl. Nearly finished with it my ASS. I have a friend that didn't start until she was 16, plus a sister that started at like 9 or 10. It varies. Oh, and there were boys in my junior high who could grow facial hair. At age 12. And maybe younger.
And anyway, to be honest, when I was 12 I remember reading that whether or not you've got your period does not mean you're a "woman" now. At Katara's age, yes, they are both still just kids. But I've seen and heard of worse than a 12/13 year old and a 14 year old making out with each other.

BTW, just because someone has the heart of a child doesn't mean they are one. In fact, adults can be LESS mature than children 50% of the time, so telling people to be "adults" in a situation just confuses me.

rajb1037 In reply to Anne-Mary-Dolnar [2011-01-04 02:29:55 +0000 UTC]

Anne, there are always exceptions, but for the most part, boys start puberty years later than girls and their puberty lasts twice as long.

That's besides the point, though, as I have no problem with the pairing. All I'm saying is that it would have been better to cut to black, cue some great Avatar music, and show Aang returning triumphantly to Katara after going back and completing his Avatar training properly (the kind that takes several years). It would have been great to see them both fully-trained/grown. At that point I wouldn't have cared if they'd shown half an hour of explicit Kataang porn to please all of the fangirl hearts.

If they'd shown them hooking up as young adults instead of children, we'd both have been happy. Right?

serennac [2009-11-30 06:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm sort of a neutral person. I'm fine with all pairings (even though I LOVE Kataang the most) as long as the shippers don't cross my boundaries with bashing or rubbing their ship in my face.

Although, I definitely definitely agree with 's statement. Katara really does not have control over Aang or hold any high status, as a mother does over her child, which is what defines pedophilia and makes it so disgusting.

Anyway, what I find annoying is how people point out how the Kataang relationship is so disgusting to them because Aang is two years younger than her. Sure, that's true. But it's not like he's going to stay young like that forever. He'll grow up and mature, as anyone will. In fact, I know couples with six year age differences and they're perfectly happy together. It's pretty much sexism if you look at the big picture and how these people react to it. Things like this happen all the time, when a younger guy starts to like an older girl. Just a two year age difference is really not so bad. Why is it okay for a guy to be older than a girl and be with her but not vice-versa? It's not okay to think that (well, in most cases, anyway) It can be vice-versa, and in the Kataang relationship, their age difference is totally acceptable. Now, if we were talking about maybe a ten-year-old liking a twenty or thirty-year-old, that's kind of a different story.

I agree with you on the shipping thing and the age thing.

I may be a hard-core Kataanger, but I'm fine with leaving most Zutarians alone. The only Zutarians who get on my nerve are the extremists. And extremists are never good.

And I agree with you on the age thing. Once they are a little bit older, that age difference won't seem like that big of a deal anymore. I have an aunt and uncle who are fifteen years apart, and they are happy together.

It's silly when people say that Katara can't like Aang because he's younger than she is when there are women like that in real life. Cougars.

But I guess the extremists will use any excuse they can get, even if it is a silly reason.

I totally agree. Sokka's such a great character, because I love how he over-reacts to everything.

It's true that Katara wants to protect and comfort Aang when the world crashes down on him. But women do that for their boyfriends and husbands, no matter how old they are. Doesn't mean they literally see themselves as his mother figure!

Point is, Katara doesn't have control over Aang or hold any higher status, as a mother does over her child, which is what defines pedophilia and makes it so disgusting. (In fact, she let's him take the lead, more often than not.)

Truth is, Zutarians know this. What they really want is for Katara to mother Zuko the exact same way.

I agree, you must be able to laugh at your own ship every now and then.
