Description The End

pixiv / tumblr / anipan

This picture is a revamp of the Black Knight picture I drew a while back. The bloodier companion piece is a little ways further down the line but personally I like this cleaner version better as I feel it is a stronger this way.

Way to be a badass, sir/madam.
BTW, does Leviathan play well? I haven't used him yet.

Sorry for the sort of late reply. And you shouldn't have asked that question, I can go on and on about Leviathan and I rarely get to so I am taking this chance! I hope you are ready for a mouthful haha

Personally, I like Leviathan's playstyle because his dark actions give it variety. His grenades are definitely his most powerful asset and I think offset the fact that he can only carry one gun. He tosses his grenades faster when he is in midair so if you can find a way to jump and toss grenades for the boss fights most will be quick work (some will still give you trouble though like Arachne). I mapped jumping to both the default button and clicking the left control stick so that I could mash out the grenades with one hand and jump with the other, haha. That said, it's also really easy to go through the game without any powerups (not as much as Sayuri, haha) if you use his tools right because his grenades are powerful by themselves and he has many dodging mechanics.

I also like his moonsault and his slide a lot. There are many segments that can be completely skipped in the game by just moonsaulting over all of the enemies and all of the obstacles. So you can choose to kill everything or kill nothing if you really wanted to. He can also moonsault behind bosses (like Augustus). Lastly, he can cancel his slides into dashes and if you continually do it rapidly enough he can actually move faster than his actual run speed which makes it easier to speed through the game with him.

So long story short, I think he offers more variety than the other gun characters and that makes him fun because I don't have to play him the same way everytime. Sayuri also has a good amount of variety to her playstyle and I like her a lot too.

So I found out when I tried him. He's a pretty cool character.
I also didn't think of moonsaulting behind bosses. Especially Augustus. Then again... I was spamming bomb throws at him...

Yeah, jumping behind Augustus isn't the quickest strategy but it is an amusing one. He does take a step back sometimes but you can moonsault with it and then continue attacking once you touch the ground again. Also, you can moonsault behind the Lotus Wyrm right at the beginning and you actually end up getting a much easier pattern to handle when you fight it. And with Persica not only can you outrun the crosshair at default but if you don't shoot at him you can moonsault behind him and attack him from his weak spot and do a lot of damage continually with very little effort and just the grenades.

I am hopelessly addicted haha.

I honestly don't blame you. It is an amazing (yet underrated) game.

When comparing this to the previous bloody version, the colors here feel a lot more polished. When it comes to the pose however, i prefer the bloody one, that one feels more stylish for some reason, here the arm holding the mask is spread out so the pose looks a little flat. The anatomy on the arm coming towards the screen feels a little, again i prefer the slanted arm from the bloody version. I like the fingers on the hand, the style on them is rough. Watch the red line under the nose, at first glance i thought it was a nose bleed. Regardless the work you did on the skin is really good, and is easily my favorite part of the picture, i also like the red strands on the hair.

Great work!

Unfortunately, it is very obvious to see where I stopped caring in the piece. There just came a point where I didn't want to work on it anymore and had to call it "finished". I chose this point, and unfortunately whenever I make decisions like that on the spot it later becomes clear where I should have exercised more patience and will. In the end, time was the worst enemy of this piece, easily. I started the initial piece in April and have been working up to this version. While I am happy I have come this far, it is sort of easy to see where portions of it from the past held me back and where the newer portions clashed with pieces from before. Sadly, when I rework pieces, I always lose something in the process. Ideally, I would hope that what is gained more than makes up for the losses, but I know I can't win every battle.

As for the arms, I think they both feel off. I don't like how I drew his arms in any of the versions. However getting rid of the gun was a no-brainer and I would never introduce that back into the piece ever again. In the first version it seemed to me like I was trying to fit the figure on the canvas instead of the other way around. It was very "claustrophobic". But maybe the opposite happened here and with the extra space I reworked the pose too much to fit the space. But either way, I don't like the arms at all and it is sort of obvious on close inspection that I didn't treat them with the same level of care as things like the hair and the face. Oh well, there is always a next time.

Thanks for the comment

Thanks! His armor is one of the hardest things to draw. All of the shapes drive me crazy.
