Without a moment of hesitation, I bolted.
My attacker was as good as paralyzed on the ground, fallen in obvious pain. His muscles were contracting in the residual effect of the electric pulse. He’d be unable to efficiently run for a while. Therefore, I knew I had a much higher chance of escape.
Also, I gained some new information about my attacker. It seemed he was, indeed, a serial killer or pastime murderer. He had raised some sharp metal object to injure me before I turned around, showing he was likely more intent on killing me than taking advantage of me. Along with this more likely motive, his appearance supported the serial killer theory.
In the light of my flashlight, I saw that a mask covered his entire face. It was a startling blue color with black eye-holes and waxy looking paint. It was frightening to say the least.
I filed all this information to the longest-term memory I had, knowing that the man was someone I didn’t want to meet again.
I ran around a corner, skidding into the light of a populated street. I dashed onto the sidewalk and melded into the thinning throngs of people. I hid within the bodies, taking a longer roundabout route to my apartment.
As I walked home, I couldn’t stop the jitters that ran up and down my body. I struggled to stay at an even pace and keep the odd grin off my face. It was difficult, but I made it to my door without mishap. I fumbled with my key, struggling to get it into the lock. My lips quirked into a smile as I recalled the alleyway meeting… Nope! Stop right now! That was NOT fun. I could have died! That was super dangerous…
And it was something that absolutely thrilled me.
I hadn’t had a moment of that level of adrenaline since… since roller-coasters stopped working on me… Since horror movies stopped scaring me. I hadn’t felt so alive in so very long…
Oh! And the calculations! The low chance of victory, the underestimation, the tactics! The strategy of it all was exhilarating. I shut the door behind me once I slipped inside, making sure to securely lock the knob and deadbolt. I leaned against the shut door, letting out a shaky breath through upturned lips.
Now what do I do? I scowled, considering my options.
I could… call the police? My face scrunched up as I pushed away from the door and headed into the kitchen, dropping my purse on a lone chair. I’m not going to call the police, that would be pointless.
What was I going to say… ‘hey, there was this guy with a shiny weapon and blue mask… and he tried to kill me in an alley but I shot him with a taser and got away?’ That sounded like a prank, even to me. No one wears a blue mask and goes around killing people besides that fictional prince from Avatar. I took a second to analyze the mask, could it have been the ‘blue spirit’…? Heck, no. That wasn’t some prince – that was a murderer! A mysterious, awesome, and thrilling murderer….
That almost killed me!
What a day!
I could use some spice to my life! Something challenging! I knows I’ve tried other things. Sure, I got into MIT easily but it wasn’t exciting enough. The bar is more exciting than a school. I tried base jumping, sky diving, trapeze walking, deep sea diving, mega chess tournaments, karate challengers… I’ve tried it all! But nothing was as exhilarating as that pursuit… I tried to keep the smile from my face, but it was useless. I liked what happened tonight, no use denying it. I can be quite the adrenaline junkie and that was just… well, almost too much.
A dull laugh passed through my lips as I made a midnight snack. Tonight’s dreams were going to be good. I can already tell. Or would they be nightmares? Who knows?! I love not knowing for once! I love all the variables that have now entered my life. I wonder if I’ll ever see him again… I took a second to consider the probability of another meeting... It seemed...
