Description EDIT: This picture is a little better in quality and contrast.



Finally, finished working on Sephiroth~ First portrait drawing that actually looks like the character I was drawing, lol.
I am completely out of practice with graphite - most of the drawings I worked on recently were done with charcoal, and I forgot how different graphite feels. I will probably do the next portrait in Derwent Onyx pencils - they feel a lot like graphite, but they don't have the distinct 'glare' to them that makes it so difficult to photograph the drawing.

Graphite and ink on drawing paper. Approx. 16 hours of work.

Great job! His eyes are very well drawn with distinct highlights and reflections. Your background is well shadowed, and the feathers add a great touch of motion to the drawing.Β  I'm extremely impressed with your blending skills as well, especially on his neck. His emotions are very evident through his expression, which is why there is so much appeal to this drawing.
Suggestions:
The shadows on his face don't have a consistent direction, since there doesn't seem to be a defined lightΒ source. For instance, there is a lot of light on his left cheek, but it suddenly becomes dark shadow, which can create an uninformΒ face. Since your blending is so well done, finding where the light source is could help the realism a lot.
Overall, the drawing has veryΒ good technique and emotion.Β  Please keep drawing!!!

Hmm, you're right, I didn't pay attention to the light source when drawing him, and it does indeed take away form the finished piece I'm really glad to hear that the emotion and atmosphere were well conveyed though, thank you ^^

Haha, thank you! I'm really glad you like him. And yes, I'm proud of those feathers. They were a lot of fun to draw, and they definitely add to the composition!


We should challenge each other to draw Sephiroth with some sort of theme for the piece in mind. I really want to draw more of him, but recently I've taken a step back from fanart....

Hey this is super awesome! Good job! I really like the details and contrast in the eyes.
I think you could try varying the values of the feathers, so the smaller feathers further in the distance is a lighter shade. Also, you could try blurring/smudging far back and close foreground elements to mimic a bokeh. I think that would add even more atmosphere. Regardless, very nice work!

I like the idea of changing the values in the feathers, I completely neglected that, and you are quite right in that it would give a greater sense of depth and contrast. Thank you for the suggestion. I think I will go back to this drawing later, or maybe do something similar with a different character. Regardless your advice will come in handy~

You really gave him this aura/presence he always has (probably something with the way he stares at the watcher), nicely done ! And I just love the feathers that had some sense of depth and a certain atmosphere to the drawing !

I love the detail and the texturesΒ  in this. Really wonderful work in graphite.Β  I didn't know that Derwent made a Onyx pencil.
I've been using the Derwent graphite pencils for my drawings and the glare from from them is terrible when I photograph. I'm glad to find out I'm not the onlyΒ  one with this problem.

I'll have to get some some of these to try. Thank you for mentioning this in your description.

Thanks for your comment Yeah, pretty much everyone I know IRL hates graphite for the glare, although I came to that only a year ago. I tend to use charcoal more now, but charcoal is harder to use for details. Plus, it smudges easily.

It's annoying that when you get enough contrast, the hair begins to look darker than it should be.... I need to work on that.
