Woa, really great, first I thought the terragen render was a photograph, but it still has terragenic elements ..
Anyway great job texturing the planets, I love the light. I personally think its to full, if you had the terragen render, the blue planet, and a few comets and nebulas, I would like it even more than now.
Maybe we could do a collaberation sometimes ?

First things first: the concept itself is cool, and many parts of this image look very nice.

That being said, there are a few problems here:

1. Lens Flares. Don't use them without heavy modification. I see at least four of them in this image, and all you've really done is modified the colors and contrast (and stretched some of them). These look cool for someone who hasn't worked with Photoshop before, but they're so recognizable to anyone who's used Photoshop a lot that they wipe out the image's credibility. If you want to use a lens flare, Radial Blur is you friend.

2. One of the planets has stars in front of it! Shame on you. You would never see something like this in real life.

3. This mistake is EXTREMELY common in sci-fi art, but you've got a lot of issues with the exposure. A real camera (or human eye) could never capture such an huge dynamic range. You've got the surface of a planet in broad daylight, which would cause the aperture or pupil to contract a lot. On the other hand, you've also got a nebula of some sort and a lot of bright stars--things that typically take minutes or hours of exposure time to show up on film.

wow great comment I'll really take all of this into consideration when I work on my next piece. All was very helpful and I really appriciate it.

Datameister In reply to Lilshadow [2006-02-05 16:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Hey, no problem.

I think my comment got cut off somehow--I intended to say at the end that this really was a nice piece, and that it was only the details that needed work. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Looks good! The two nebulas taking up the middle space seem like outstanding splotches of colour though. I'm not sure why I got that impression, but nevertheless I like the bottom half of the pic the most.

my main peeve with this one is that there seems to be 3 suns... one behind each planet... you know u can make a planet without a light sourse secifically for it and it alone.
