Right back at ya. Came back and tell me ur opinionz when we live in a post-racial society.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

heytherepanda In reply to Cherruyue [2014-05-24 04:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Also the term "epicanthic fold" does not mean the same thing as "Asian eye." Β Just clearing that up for you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cherruyue In reply to heytherepanda [2014-05-25 01:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Actually yeah no, because there is no such thing as "Asian eye" since Asians aren't a homogeneous blob. The epicanthic fold occurs in populations all over the world but are most commonly associated with East Asian, South Asian and Central Asian peoples due to the prevalence of the phenotype in those groups and the greater contact they have had with white people than say, the San people have. All foetuses actually have epicanthic folds but many lose them during the gestation period. The aforementioned Asian peoples are an exception as they tend to keep these epicanthic folds, however, some also lose them. I know many Asian people that do not have epicanthic folds so do they suddenly not have "Asian eyes"?Β

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

heytherepanda In reply to Cherruyue [2014-05-25 13:22:55 +0000 UTC]

You were the one getting pissed off because the term "Asian eye" was used instead of epicanthic fold. Β If you recognize that it's not an Asian-only trait, just common, then there was no point to your, "you mean epicanthic fold jfc," argument.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

heytherepanda In reply to Cherruyue [2014-05-24 03:57:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't think the term "Asian eyes" was meant to be so much racist as it was just a simpler way of people knowing what the actual piece was about. Β Only a handful of people would know what else to call them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cherruyue In reply to heytherepanda [2014-05-25 01:29:13 +0000 UTC]

I understand but it is based on Orientalist understandings and therefore comes off as racist. And the fact that not many know about this shows how ignorant people are about race (which in itself is pseudo-scientific creation to support white supremacy).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

heytherepanda In reply to Cherruyue [2014-05-25 13:30:02 +0000 UTC]

Or it could be that the term "epicanthic fold" isn't really a household term and people aren't raised to believe that is a racist way of thinking more as an observation. Β It's the same with other traits of other races. Β Asians typically have narrow eyes, Caucasians have sensitive skin, African Americans usually have more oils in their hair, etc. etc. Β The entire piece was just a study on the aging process of a particular race's eye shape. Β Obviously the way the eye is shaped is going to change how it looks as it ages. Β We could run around calling it the "Aging of the Slant-eyed Yellow Ones." Β Not to mention the artist said they used them AND their family for these references, why would they use racial slurs for THEIR race? Β That doesn't add up. Β I think this whole "racist" thing is just manifesting out of nothing.
