Oh my, you've been quite unlucky in your choice. Both Enterprise and Ep 1 are probably the worst of both worlds.
I do agree with WhiteGaby that TNG is the best.
I've seen the old one, too, it's not too bad. It helps to know that Gene Roddenberry (who created the series) wanted a way to express some (political) things that could not be expressed unless you moved it all to space. All that got lost in Enterprise, imo (Roddenberry died), or maybe it shows how some Western country moved backwards in their evolution.
Deep Space 9 gets very dark towards the end, too, when war breaks out. Besides that, they killed off my favourite character and replaced her with an idiot. After that I stopped watching. star Trek tends to always kill off my favourite characters...
A few of the movies are quite good, too, but some are also quite weak. The Undiscovered Country is one of my favourites and maybe First Contact.
With Star Wars I'd recommend watching the "old" ones. You can easily skip Ep 1 to 3 - but you should definitely know Ep 4 - 6. They're classics.
(That one dude became famous by stealing the plot and turning it into a fantasy novel (Eragon), so that's how good the story is.)
But even as bad as Episode 1 is - comparing it to Twilight... that's just too harsh.

What are you out of your Vulcan mind (sorry just had to get the quote out) you may have your opinion but so far I think the original series is the best. and thank god someone finally agrees with me on Eragon being based off of Star Wars. I can kind of see why everyone hates the prequels but I actually thingk they're really good especially 3 although the originals are definetly the best

To be honest, I was just randomly surf channeling and didn't know any better. Although which Star Trek series would be the best to start with? Original?

I started with The Next Generation. Then moved to DS9 and Voyager. Each series has different general atmospheres and attitudes. TNG is actually very positive and my favorite. Voyager is my second fav, but the general mood can be depressing or desperate at times (remember, they are lost and alone in space trying to get home). DS9 is interesting and quite complex compared to the others, but it does have pretty strong I guess you can say "religious" overtones.
I completely stayed away from Enterprise after watching a few episodes.
Opening credits = LOL
But everyone will probably tell you the same thing, start with the original series. Think of it this way: there's a reason why the whole franchise has such a large following.

Gosh, thank you for your detailed explanation. I'm not one for sci-fi but have been a bit curious about Star Trek. I prefer shows with a more positive tone, so I think I might give TNG a whirl. Though of course, the original is always the best place to start... I like old films/media but I'm curious to know if the original series aged well?
