You may recognize my good friend Isa 's work from different fandoms, including Tangled, How To Train Your Dragon, Megamind and Avatar: The Last Airbender. She's also the girl I keep talking up because of her floating-couples art that I love so much.Isa draws this gorgeous comic called Namesake , about people who fall through portals into fairytales and are forced to take on the role of a character. It's fascinating and astoundingly beautiful, and funny and creepy and delightful.
This is Ozma, featured in Namesake, who is sort of the benevolent ruler of the land of Oz. I'm not sure if she just constantly wears poppies in her hair or if they spontaneously grow out of her head, which wouldn't be out of the question, but I love her.

Alright, listen: I had no idea Ozma was from a series of books by Frank Baum. Now I know. Please give it a rest with the Baum comments.

This isn't how I imagined Ozma, but L. Frank Baum had no continuity, so I figure, as long as she looks pretty and kind and has the crown, she's Ozma.

Gaah, her nose is adoreable, and the positioning of the fingers on her right hand is absolutely drawing me in. Also love your border style there.

I'd be comfortable with laying my head in her lap after a hard day. Is that a weird comment? I just get that super motherly vibe from this image. The earthen imagery helps, so I guess it's sort of a pagan-Gaia-ish thing. I know next to nothing about the Baum universe (or Namesake, but I'm going to fix that riiight now), so hopefully this impression I've gotten doesn't somehow contrast with something factual out there somewhere. I hope I'm making sense.

yeah, she's also mentioned in the book 'wicked' by gregory mcguire, which i assume grew inspiration from baum. i just thought it was a 'wicked' fan art. nice job tho

First of all.... I LOVE YOU FOREVER. Ozma is my favorite character in all of the OZ novels by Frank Baum! I normally have to HUNT DOWN fanart, so seeing Ozma in all her glory in my messages just made my jaw drop.
Secondly, however, Ozma was a character created by Frank Baum in 1901-ish, for the second book in the OZ series, "The Land of Oz". Her appearances in other media such as "Wicked" or the movie "Return to Oz" is out of character, and sadly not canon. :3 Please give credit where credit is due! XD The original OZ novels are so unheard of and tragically under-appreciated, it's good for people to know where these amazing characters really came from! :3

I had no idea where she came from before today, so don't shoot the messenger. Credit is due to Isabelle, whose work I love, and whose character design I used here. I changed some of the language in the artist comments, so. There you go. Glad you like this, though -- if you like the books, you'll probably really love Namesake.

D: I didn't mean to shoot the messenger at all, just letting you know who Ozma was. :3 (And credit for Ozma's design can't go to Isabelle, can it? D: You drew her exactly as she was depicted in Mr. Baum's novels, as he designed her! XD) I actually expected to be the only one to tell you about it, since I hardly ever meet anyone else who even KNOWS about the books let alone people who have read them! This is lovely, and I'm sure your friend is doing wonderful things with the character, but perhaps you could mention that Ozma was created by L. Frank Baum? If you're interested, you might want to have a look at the original John R. Neill illustrations. Here's a first edition book cover of Ozma of Oz from 1907: [link] .

I actually had no flipping clue that Ozma was created by somebody else. But Isa's design is her own style, just like Bri's Mad Hatter is all her own.
