Especially since the surroundings are rather barren - you can totally see why the area was chosen to be Mordor in the LOTR films.

For probably the same reason as the vast majority of long exposures taken with grey filters: The filters do change the colours towards a brown/orange tint making it a lot of work to recover the original ones.
