For some reason, even though they both suffered different forms of neglect, I have more sympathy for mai than ty lee. I duno. She was spoiled, but her childhood was kinda wasted away, IMO. I guess its mostly because her personality was effected in such a negative way in the long run. At least Ty lee is

I love how you did backgrounds for these characters! I know in my first time watching of Avatar I didn't have much like for these three. Well Azula is supposed to have hate. Tylee was pretty cool, but I didn't care for Mai. Now though, I've really come to like Mai more. These flashbacks are great because they all seem to flow so well. Tylee's was so perfect it seemed cannon.

I'm glad you did a zoomed in pic and placed it at the top. You can really see the emotion on her face.
This is the reason why I love Avatar so much. The characters are real and believable as well as relateable. Background characters like Mai and Ty Lee give meaning to the "Bad Guys". That's why "The Beach" is my favorite episode. It gives them depth and even though I've "hated" Mai, she's still a great character. I'm pretty sure I was just hating myself for being like her once.
Bryke should have had more about them even though it would have been a destraction from the main characters. Wonderful pic and I don't heart Azula, I feel bad for her. No one deserves to be degrated to that.

Mai's in my top 5 favorite characters mostly because I get her. I get her problems, I understand her personality (she's not blah, she's quiet and sarcastic, bitter and she has the same sense of humour as Zuko, my fave character.)

Oh, stop your bitching. The exact same thing happened to Toph. (quote: "My parents gave me everything that I ever asked for. But they never gave me the one thing that I really wanted. Their love. You know what I meanβ?")
And SHE didn't let them quash all of her emotions out of HER. She ran away and found badgermoles and a hell of a good time.
I have zero sympathy for Mai, sorry.

I love Mai.
Her childhood was exactly like mine. I am just coming out of it now, and I realize how sad it is. I suppose that's one of the reasons why I love her so much. She is me pure and simple. And if she got her Zuko, why can't I get my own Zuko?

Masks people wear aren't always blank. They can be happy and cheerful, too.
Mai simply let her parents step all over her. Toph, when faced with the same situation, ran away and found herself badgermoles a hell of a good time.

sometimes i feel like her, controlled and wasted away. that's why whenever i get in trouble i feel terrible about myself, but i hardly get in trouble because of that feeling. and my past really sucked, so my childhood was torn away from me. that's why i'm making up for it now.

I know how that feel. My mom side of the family is a bit like that. If you misbehave or misspoken in any way you get scolded. At now they change a little.

I don't care what some might think but I really pitty Mai. Yes she was a spoiled child who had everything, she wasn't even denying it. But being fully controlled and not allowed to do anything and speak without an agreeement?
That's too harsh! No wonder she grew up all quiet without any obviouse emotions.

Unfortunately I'm the exact opposite. I feel more sympathy with Ty Lee because she's still broken up about her family situation (she cried at The Beach) and that kind of thing is inescapable (sp?). She can't escape the fact that she looks like her 6 sisters but Mai could have always rebelled against her parents or told them how she felt, like Toph did.
... I should write a fanfic where Mai tells off her parents. It would be epic!
