This painting is for the ConceptArt.Org contest "Newborn":

My WIP Thread :

My Newborn is from the concept of the Greek mythology story of the birth of Pegasus that sprang from Medusa's neck as Perseus was beheading her. The birth of Pegasus.
*NOTE- I added a nebula for the background to help the "Newborn" concept and the stars makes Pegasus's constellation.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful feed back and the honored DD!

I love this artwork. However, there are a few things that are misplaced. But that's what makes us human- right?

Anyway, the hooves on the Gorgon's body should sink in a little bit more, rather than floating atop it. I know you were going for a snake-like appearance, but snakes are soft. Hooves are hard, therefore the hoof would sink in a little bit more. Not trying to be too harsh, just being truthful.

The blood in the tail sunk in, but there should probably be a pool by the base so it makes sense that the tail has blood in it. However, I like the way that it jumped up.

I love the eye and face, but the muzzle might need a little bit more transition, for it goes from grey to dark brown. Or it might be a bloodstain and I misinterpreted.

I love the technique of the wings, it is lovely! However, the blood wouldn't droop off of it, it would drip. Not a ruiner, but it makes the piece look a little less realistic. The shading technique you used is lovely and worked quite well.

The Gorgon was split rather effectively in half, ad I love the snakes coming out of the stomach. However, as I stated earlier, the snakey part needs to be a little 'softer' so that the hoof can sink in.

The raised leg on Pegasus looks a little awkward. The knee needs to be a little bit larger, and the hock a little smaller. However, it still looks great.

The fire seems to be climbing from the top of its cage, which really makes it look strange. I'd suggest adding a tinge of blue inside the cage and trying to get the fire to emanate from there.

All in all, this is a lovely piece, with much imagination and potential. The bloodstains on the floor ar every realistic, and it looks almost as if the Gorgon is having her last spasm before death (might that be the reason for the hooves not sinking in?). I love the background and characters in this piece, good job.

I think that what is clinging on the Pegasus is connective tissues, shredded muscles, & gore laced tendons, maybe even entrails. The decapitation would have had the Gorgon exsanginate, leaving only the still blood within the creatures body remaining, enough to smear onto a birthing miracle as is shown on Pegasus, but the design on the gory bits looks more fleshy than just some blood splatter. In the event I am misinterpreting the illustration, we could also be catching all this in mid motion before the winged coast's wings completely spread out with force & it rears back with a nigh & winny, flinging the Medusa mess about.

Either way, I wouldn't think the artist just simply overlooked the obvious way blood acts considering how every other piece of the composition shows great understanding of the subject matter... I am voting the artist illustrated exactly what they had intended & you didn't look into it hard enough before giving the critique. I maybe wrong, but I doubt it.

Absolutely stunning piece, very detailed. Love it to bits.
I truly admire the layering style you've incorporated into the wings.
Personally, the only improvement I think to make it perfect is the effect of the blood on the fur.

Surely the blood would stain the fur of the horse, not hang off it.
This isn't a serious, angry criticism. Just something I think will make the picture absolutely perfect.

The use of sinew hanging off Pegasus and still half-clinging to the carcass is a good effect. It gives the feeling of truly ripping himself out of his shell.

All in all... You should be very proud. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart" />

This is gruesome, but also ridiculously beautiful. the level of detail is insane here, and although I would make some parts of the blood a little darker and a little thinner, it still looks tip top. I disagree with the 'wet look' I see people mentioning for the gory bits. Sure they could look wetter, but people need to remember this is a creature of myth and legend. It doesn't necessarily have to have the same traits as a human!
You have such an incredible talent and you will not believe how much of a relief it is to have a human that can bring this level of work- I say human because a lot of artists with skills like this never bother to speak to the people that comment on their work :-/
Pegasus just looks so beautiful. wonderful detail to the coat and the wings.
Medusa's body looks perfect- it seems to me like it has such evil- especially with the blood, gore and the emanating snakes.
I know there is something wrong with the flame, but to be honest, I can't put my finger on what, so I can offer little critique on it as I can;t think of a way to rectify it e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="LOL" />.
The rest of the scene itself is magnificent with the detailed stonework and textures to everything
Incredible and breathtaking work. If this ever becomes available as a print, I want it! Hats off to you e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

WOW Xerces...your comment is wonderful and feels great to hear!! This really means alot. I have worked so hard on this it is crazy. I wanted to do something that would really stand out. The fact that I was unsure how people would take it..like it or hate it kind of thing. I didn't even use any reference in making this. I was thinking of it beeing a myth so it comes more from the mind and heart You are right about the flame..I see it too.

I also thank you for the "human" part about talking and commenting back. I feel that helps me learn more and share with others. I would in no way be where I am today without someone answering my questions.

When this is finshed I will put it up for a print
I like this thing that tells you people have requested a print...that is super nice to see that someone would want it buy it!
Thank you again...you are wonderful!

This is stunning. Listening to the epic music playlist I have and seeing the realistic struggle that Pegasus has emerging from the slaughtered Medusa blows my mind. I can almost seeing it happening for real. Like in a movie. If I ever become a director and create an epic Greek gods/godess movie you're picture will be the reference for it all!
