Lovely photo with beautiful earthy tones. The captured pose gives an almost cheeky look to the animal, "Peering" back around the trunk. I Also like the way you have got a nice focus on the facial area while the tail is a little blurred...makes the tail look like it is coming out of the photo (3D). The zoom shot has captured clearly the whiskers, adding to the cuteness of this woodland creature. The contrast of the rough bark to the softness of the fur is really nice also. The scene has an almost fairyland quality to it with the moss growing out from the rotting wood. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Wild polecat, not a ferret by the looks of it. Excellent capture.

Thank you This is indeed a polecat, the wild ancestors of ferrets, although this particular individual was photographed in captivity.

So how closely related is a polecat to a weasel? And where do martins fit in?

This polecat species is a member of the genus Mustela, along with most of the weasel species, so they are closely related. Martens are members of the Martes genus, both are part of the Mustelinae subfamily, which is in the Mustelidae family, where you'll also find otters, wolverines and badgers. I tend to turn to Wikipedia for the basic scientific orders of species.Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustelid…
