Description
Azael, in his first ever official painting! yaaaaay for Azael.
This was originally intended for one of the later chapters in "The Depth of Shadows" but i think it might end up making a better illustration for one of the earlier chapters, so i am as yet undecided.

LOS prologue - revised
The young brunette lay quietly on the bed, her eyes closed, her breaths short and shallow. Holding her hand gently, the Demon next to her watched as her chest rose and fell, stroking her hair as she slept quietly in the failing evening light.
It had been only 14 short years since this small human girl found her way into his life, and even shorter still since she had found her way into his heart. She looked nearly the same as she did when he first found her crouched inside a partially burnt cupboard, sobbing quietly. She had the same long, wavy, walnut colored hair, the same green eyes, and the same fair skin. Only her skin was quite a bit paler now, as she clung to her last moments.
He pondered for a moment the briefness of mortal life, and how in an instant it could be cut even shorter than it already was. Even though he'd grown closer

The Depth of Shadow - chapter 1
Dust filled the air in the hot midday sun, and the only sound was that of hoof beats and heavy footsteps. The scent of the newly disturbed dirt filled the dry air, but the odd hint of something burning lingered subtly amongst the smells of heat and dust. The company of demons had been growing weary of their journey, but none quite so much as the large, blue-gray demon at the head of the campaign, whose golden eyes glimmered in the heat as his black mount trudged heavy hoofed across the cracked, arid ground.
The sky was cloudless and bright, yet the hazy atmosphere made it difficult to see too far into the distance. The smell grew stronger. A muddy patch of gray formed on the white horizon as they continued to walk, and the large demon called for his men to pick up their pace. The lazy, shuffling feet of the men and demons behind him turned into a steady, swift march as they neared the cloud of smoke dispersin

I know I make him out to rather be the bad guy, but hes actually not all bad, lol..... *has no reference in current story line to support this* OK LOOK GUYS, I know him a lot better than you do - and really his actions are more comparable to a spoiled child not getting what they want. yes, Azael is essentially throwing a tantrum. a really... long... couple hundred ... thousand...years.... tantrum. He is a dick, granted, but I cant help but like him sometimes for his pretty legit badassary. He used to not be so dickish, and its really not *only* his fault that he do what he do... Lucian isn't exactly innocent in their little strife, and quite frankly it was Lucian's negligence that lead to this whole fiasco. Azael could have made a seriously stronger effort BUT YOU KNOW, its not exactly in his nature to change.
Azael has an affinity to fire, to the degree that can literally embody it. So for him, it might as well be as much apart of his being as a soul. Ever seen fire go build some shit? no. Its always, ALWAYS destructive. now, this can actually be quite positive, and during the Great Wars Azael was really an awesome asset, and a big part of the reason that Lucian and his brothers managed to survive. After that, Lucian wanted growth and change (if you forgot, his second affinity is flora) and Azael, while he thought he was fighting for control over his own life, lost it again due to what Lucian wanted. Azael is unable to thrive in the world that Lucian wants to build, and Lucian doesn't understand why Azael cant just up and decide to be different. Azael on the other hand cant understand how one can simply *change*- he grows discontent and his inability to quite literally be himself, turns into the slow destruction of his quadrant, and eventually himself.
As he is in the "present day" stories, I loath the shit out of him. but he wasn't always that way... like most dark characters he was a long time in the making.
If Lucian had been smarter, he would have made Azael something more like Captian of the Guard, where he could vent his shit on the recruits who have apparently an abundance of healing potions. lol. Alastor is good at his job but frankly, Azael would have been a better choice.
AHhhh, hind sight. LOL
