nice composition.
i overcame the problem of water buckling (and spoiling my photos) by switching to watercolour paper.
in all fairness we should be using Xuan paper for this type of thing but if it ain't broke?

*laughs* I used double Xuan for this one... and finally learned how to mount them easily enough that the buckling isn't a problem... I need to take pictures of the mounted paintings, as it makes a world of difference.
I have tried watercolor paper, but the effects, especially for water and color absorption just aren't the same, and the *colors* I can get on single Xuan compared to watercolor paper are just... astonishingly different.
But I agree with you!! If watercolor paper works for you, USE IT! *grins* It's much better to not break what works for you.

heh well i use the watercolour only because i have so much of it and it seems a waste to buy xuan paper now. i have a long sheaf my in laws brought me from beijing but haven't gotten around to painting it yet.
what do you to to mount it? (xuan, i mean)

Paste it to another sheet of xuan on the back, using a wheat paste glue with a bit of alum in it to keep the bugs off. *laughs* It's a bit more involved than that, with wetting the painting and the backing sheet and what you have to do to get it on really flat. Wetting makes the paper relax and flatten, and if you treat the backing paper right, it'll go on flat as anything, and then I paste the whole thing to a sheet of plexiglass (or the mirror in the bathroom) and let it dry flat there. Pasting it to a flat surface make sure the whole thing dries *flat* as anything, and solid. And the resulting painting is totally flat and the whites are a lot whiter.
I want to do a picture tutorial of how to do it, but I need to get off my butt and get the new picture of the mounted paintings up first.

that does sound pretty involved ^^
do you seperate the back and front sheets? or is the whole operation a 2-ply deal?

Hm...
If I paint on double-shuan, I leave it as it is and back it with another sheet of double-shuan.
If I paint on single-shaun, I just back it with double-shaun as well. No separating of anything is involved. Just gluing on a second sheet, so it all ends up being 2-ply.
I think, with single-shuan the difference can be summed up in the comparison of a single painting before and after. You see how the colors pop out so much better?
Hee. Yes, I got off my butt and submitted the backed paintings.

yeah there's definitely a huge difference.
turns out i have a long sheaf of it that came back with me from beijing which i totally forgot about. but since i will likely only get 12 or so compositions out of it, will likely 1 ply it and mount it on white card or something.

Ooo! Good luck with that!!
Yeah... I mounted a number of paintings on white cardstock, and it worked out well, I think there are a number in my gallery, like the chrysanthemum and smaller paintings. I think it works very well.

i realize i said the same thing above twice. early onset alzheimer's i suppose.
ps: just did a quick study on xuan for the first time to get a feel for it and holy moley! it's *so* absorbent! everything looked so much more earthy and natural. after having to tighten up and control my strokes so much on watercolour paper, this was just so...easy! adgopamngoandg so excited.
why didn't i use this paper first

*laughs* You wouldn't have had to try so hard on the watercolor paper, first and wouldn't have gotten that kind of control. *grins*
Isn't it lovely? I feel that way about the single xuan after the double xuan, too. It's amazing the difference.
Good luck and happy painting!!
