18x24" 45x60cm acrylic on watercolor canvas (painted ca 2005)An unusual scene for me. Usually I avoid painting tree trunks if at all possible. Just don't like painting them, so I hide them behind building whenever possible. However, in this piece I faced my tree trunk phobia head on. I don't have this piece at hand, but I suspect that I used rather thick paint on some of the highlights and leaves on the ground to make them distinct – an advantage over pure watercolors.

I was wondering if you use masking fluid or something similar to achieve those thin, very light lines?

Thank you. I very lightly trace the main lines on the paper or canvas and then just paint within them. To keep the wet paints from flowing together I just kept them slightly apart while painting them, hence the slight white lines between some of the elements. This being acrylics, once the paint is dry you can go over it with washes without lifting the existing paint so you can add color to the unpainted lines if you care to.
