Description 24x12" 60x30 cm acrylic on hardboard

I'd been thinking of Chinese lacquer work when I did my Midnight Impatiens painting last week, and I wanted to do a landscape in that style. Kashiwanizu, who knows, having real Chinese lacquer work around her house, suggested that I outline in gold instead of black, so that is what I have done this time around. Outlining has it's ins & outs, in that it is not clear to me just what needs to be outlined -- every object, every color break, only highlights...being far from clear on what to do, I did a little of everything. I had to photograph this painting from a distance with a bright background, otherwise the camera would have faded the black into grey, so the big photo is not very good quality.

It's beautiful and did justice to the original idea ^^ Usually the whole image is drawn with thin outlines, and then the gold is applied; so I think highlights don't need the gold outline... But your interpretation made the image looked more like an antique, so I think it's not a bad idea ^^

Thank you. When I looked on google images, it seemed like a lot of the samples had the whole of the landscape done in gold. I was torn between doing a more traditional Chinese landscape and a lacquer version, and I more or less split the difference. I used the gold in the washes and colors, so the whole thing except the black rather shines in the light.

Wow, you sure are painting in a different style, that's how we grow! Great!

Every once and a while I run out of ideas and then cast around for some new and some old ones to try for a while. Then I go back to what I do because, well, it's what I do. I'm an old Taoist, and that's what we do.

A total deviation (pun not intended)from you norm, the gold outlining doesn't distract me
it looks great, Only thing i grouse about is the moon which looks like a bloch of white,
Other than that the rest is very nice! Keep'em coming Chuck!

This is sort of "art project" painting: not actually what I do, but done to see what I can do. The gold is brighter than in the photo, so the yellow of the moon blends in with the gold outline and it's not as clunky as it looks. I like Chinese landscapes and have painted my versions in the past, but because they are more imitation than original I don't care to do them.
