Cloud Nine

"Ja… Ja…" the little Miss nodded her head a couple of times, a smile plastered broadly on her face as she chatted down the phone to someone Mr. Rude didn't know. But she was speaking in German. He narrowed his eyes as she giggled and twiddled the phone cord in her fingers, sat beside him on the arm of his chair. He looked away as he caught her eye, lacing his fingers together and resting his hands on his stomach, glaring forward.

He only knew of one person who spoke German. He'd never met him before, and yet he loathed him inside and out. But it couldn't possibly be him on the phone… Otherwise Ms. Sensitive wouldn't look so happy… Would she?

"Oh, ja ... Ja, ja. Wir müssen uns treffen sich einer der Tage, dann ... Mhmm ... Ja ... Wundervoll. Auf Wiedersehen."

"Didn't know you spoke German," Mr. Rude said, bitterly, as she hung up the phone. She looked at him curiously.

"Oh… Yes, Mr. Rude. Quite fluently, if I'm honest."

He crossed his arms "Who was zat, anyway?"

She broke into a huge grin, which only broadened his scowl as she replied "Oh, Mr. Distressing."

He turned his eyes to her, his eyes full of anger "Oh, ZAT creep?! What did he want?!"

Her smile only broadened as she giggled, bringing her hands to her face "He says he still loves me!"

"'E would, wouldn't 'e?"

"What do you mean?"

"Oh, Mizz Senseeteeve, surely you are not zis stupid. Zis Meester Deestresseeng, 'e did nussing but 'urt you. 'E does not love you, 'e is trying to wind you up."

Her smile faded.

"Do you deem me undesirable then, Mr. Rude?"

"Non. I deem 'im a rat."

She giggled.

"Well, Mr. Rude, I can honestly say that you very much incorrect. I know him very well, and, as badly as he has treated me in the past, he has never lied to me."

"'E slept wiz anuzzer girl!"

"Yes, but he didn't lie to me about it… simply kept it from me. But he told me the truth when I found out."

"And 'e did it to spite you! For god sake, Mizz Senseeteeve, I am not letting him weed 'is way back into your life. Are you not satisfied wiz what you 'ave, now?"

Ms. Sensitive turned her eyes down to the floor "No… I'm not…"

"Well… You should be."

"But not because I don't have him…"

"Oh…?"

She raised her eyes again "You know what I want."

His face flushed red, and he looked away, scowling.

"Why are you so 'appy zat 'e loves you, zen?"

She broke into a huge grin, falling backwards into his lap, her hands behind her head, heaving a great sigh of happiness. His face only grew warmer at how close she was, and how desperately he wanted to prop her up and hold her. He hesitated, then set a shaky hand on her head, combing his fingers through her hair. She gazed up at him, that smile not leaving her face.

"I am happy, Mr. Rude, because I have finally escaped him."

"What do you mean?" he asked, still stroking her hair. She leaned into his touch, closing her eyes, fishing for his other hand. She squeezed it.

"He loves me. But I no longer love him."

"… Wh… Wh-who DO you love…?" he asked, his voice shaking. She hummed for a moment, pushing herself into a sitting position and leaning forward, lacing her fingers through his and kissing his nose. She smiled as his eyes flickered shut, and he hummed, his own small smile playing on his lips.

"Et toi?"

His lids parted slightly, and he leaned forward, kissing her nose in turn.

She beamed.

"Never been to cloud nine, before," he said. He pulled her closer slightly, kissing the back of her hand.

"Oh?"

"Not until now, at least."

She kissed his forehead.

"My, how wonderfully cheesey."
