Description All of these Disney/DreamWorks/etc. flappers are getting re-polishes for the new '20s. They will have a new blog on tumblr, as well as a new folder in this DA gallery, starting New Years of 2020. All of these old versions meanwhile are going to be dubbed "WIPS." Chrome out.

The Roaring Twenties is a great time and place to be a woman, but not so great to be an Asian American. Racism is everywhere. Jim Crow laws are in place. And as of 1924, the United States of the Twenties isn't even allowing immigrants from Asian countries unless they are Filippino or Japanese. (history.state.gov/milestones/1… ) On the other hand, Anna May Wong is acting in silent films as the first Chinese American movie star. If Anna May can make her big break, wonders one young girl, why not me?

Fed up with her subculture's restrictive gender rolls, Chinese American Fa Mulan has made her decision. In the dead of night she shears off her hair into a modern bob, packs her belongings, and leaves a note for her parents. Six months later a suspiciously feminine man named "Ping" is competing in archery contests and martial arts fights in San Francisco. A good most of the crowd is (literally) betting on Ping. By night, Mulan sheds her male disguise and attends speakeasies as herself. Only a select few friends know her secret. Most of these were losing opponents who insisted on getting to know the "man" who'd bested them, and were stunned to be greeted with the beautiful flapper above.

Not surprisingly, I took a lot of inspiration from Anna Mae Wong, since she's one of the only Asian celebrities you can find pictures of from the 1920s. However, her flowered headdress was inspired by one worn by Billie Kent, in her first appearence on"Boardwalk Empire."

Thanks so much! It's been fun so far. I have another handful planned, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to start drawing them.
