Description All of these Disney/DreamWorks/etc. flappers are getting re-polishes for the new '20s. They will have a new blog on tumblr, as well as a new folder in this DA gallery, starting New Years of 2020. All of these old versions meanwhile are going to be dubbed "WIPS." Chrome out.

Scotland saw a wave of emmigration durring the 1920s, losing almost one fifth of the country's working population (www.educationscotland.gov.uk/h… ). The economy in Scotland wasn't looking too good, but across the pond America was experiencing the Roaring Twenties. Thousands of Scottish people immigrated to the U.S. in search of a better life.

Like so many other Scottish families, the Fergeson's have are hoping to change their fate. Merida misses Scotland, but loves America. The Jazz Age seems made for a "live wire" like her, and she quickly becomes one of the most wild and popular flappers at the speakeasies.

And things are looking up for a female athlete as well, albeit slowly. In 1922, the AAU opens track and field events to women. The in 1926, Gertrude Ederle becomes the first female to swim the English channel. For the first half of the '20s, figure skating is still the only Olympic sport that will omit women, but this changes in 1928, when track and field events at least. And what of Merida's sport of choice, archery? For some reason, information on women's archery in the 1920s is almost impossible to find online. But vintage pictures indicates that girls did use bows, at least in Austin, Texas.  (www.pinterest.com/pin/21033224…  www.pinterest.com/pin/73746512…  www.pinterest.com/pin/42411248…

So after much begging, fighting, kissing and making up, Merida's parents agree to let her attend the University of Austin, Texas, which offers archery classes to women. The catch of course is that in order to get into and remain in college, Merida must study hard with her mother and learn to act like a lady, at least by day. By night, she's free to frequent as many speakeasies as her heart desires.

The arrow slashed through her dress's neckline was inspired by one of the outfits worn by Panama Smith (Gladys George) in "The Roaring Twenties" (1939). Panama's hair was similarly large and curly in that movie, contrary to the more common slick, straight hair one normally associates with flappers.
