Thank you!Β I think sometimesΒ the only time I DO have patience is with art.Β I have some pieces that I say just kind of "drew themselves".Β This is one of them - I had an idea and started drawing and then just kept adding and adding as I thought of things.Β

What tools do you prefer for detailed works like these?

My favorite pens are with a 005 nib. I used to use Kohinoor Rapidograph (and still have tons of parts, pieces and nibs all over) but now, I buy the Micron 005 .20mm nib permanent ink pens from Sakura of America by the dozen! I run around with a variety of different sizes of nib and brushes, but that size, by far, is my favorite one to use for fine detail.

Thank you! I did this piece for a contest depicting the Earth Goddess. I started with her face and then just started adding more and more - creating her headdress and hair from things that just popped into my head. Fun to do!

The ammount of detail in this is astounding, it's those kinds of drawings that make you stare for a while to contemplate all the elements that compose it.

Do you base yourself on pictures?
π: 0 β©: 1
LKBurke29 In reply to audreve [2013-12-09 02:26:47 +0000 UTC]
Do I use pictures as reference? Sometimes. For the scratchboard portraits, yes, definitely! Sometimes I use 2 or 3 so I can get a good feel of the face I'm working on. For the fantasy stuff - most of that, I dream up (concepts or faces of my OC's)... usually while walking or daydreaming, which I do a lot. I may flip through books or the internet to get a feel of something - like a bird's wing or the spots or stripes of a cat. Also thank goodness I have nice friends and family who don't mind when I say, "Hey, do this" - and I might snap a picture to catch an angle or shadow of an arm or hand. I don't usually have a rough draft - I do a loose pencil sketch blocking out where I generally will put things, and then all the work comes with the inking - so I work holding both - pencils and pens - and I go back and forth between the two. I hope I answered your question!

Great answer! I loved it!!
It's amazing how people see the world differently⦠when I'm walking around with friends, or watching movies, etc. I'll notice different things!
I'll notice shading, colours, patterns, curves, while most of my friends notice clothes, brands, conversations, looksβ¦
And it's always nice to have people pose for you, because nothing's better than getting a feel of the real deal before transforming into a work of art
