Rahkshi, while they are lifeforms belonging to the kingdom of Bionicle species, are almost alien. The "Rahkshi" itself is a bizarre mechanized suit deriving from Energized Protodermis and an unfortunate Kraata, wielding a staff. The Kraata themselves have an inherent power, which when they are inside a Rahkshi is able to manifest fully -- but only if the Rahkshi itself is grasping a staff-like object.They operate the suit via neural pathways that lead to its power core, which is actually more like a brain or CPU that converts the Kraata's thought into energy signals from the center Energy Cell that travel to other Energy Cells around its body. They then behave like muscles and move the being.
Lastly, their spines aren't just for show. Inside the primary three ones are sensors that pick up environmental conditions like air pressure, wind direction, temperature, electromagnetic disturbances, etc, and feeds it all to the Kraata. This keen and precise attention to detail is what makes Rahkshi such dangerous and highly advanced predators.

I really like this. I especially like the idea of the rahkshi's dorsal spines being sensors of some kind.

before Bionicle was out in the UK, i used to own a similar series of robotic mechano-esc machines that were all about firing plastic discs in different ways and such (if anyone knows what they are called from my vague description that would be awesome to know? 
other than that point, i was un-aware about how in-depth the Bionicle universe was
can you suggest a site or wiki-esc place online where i can read as much of the story as possible? :3

these ones were only robots i think and you pull back the disc in the certain positions their fixed to fire them, maybe that helps haha XD

"unfortunate kraata"? arent they meant to be the 'sons' of makuta? according to the movie, he called them his sons. Makes sense since theres only one of each element, unlike the bohrok of which there were hundreds of each. And in the movie he seemed to have 'hatched' them from his wierd tube machine things.

There are 42 rahkshi types--
Accuracy:
Could strike the smallest target at a great distance or in any environment or condition.
Adaptation:
Instantly adapted to take maximum advantage of any condition or situation.
Anger
Had the power to turn even Super beings against one another in anger.
Chain Lightning:
Could control devastating bolts of chain lightning that leap between multiple targets.
Chameleon:
Had the ability to become completely invisible in any environment.
Confusion:
Extended proximity can reduce even a Super being to mindless babbling.
Cyclone:
Has the power to create and control powerful cyclones at will.
Darkness
Has the power to consume all light in a large area.
Density Control:
Complete control over own density and that of any object in physical contact.
Disintegration:
Has the power to reduce even protodermis (steel) to dust.
Dodge:
Impossible to physically strike, no matter how swiftly or powerfully.
Elasticity:
Can stretch incredible lengths in the blink of an eye.
Electricity:
Powerful electrical field can be controlled to surround or stun distant objects or creatures.
Fear:
Has the power to bring fear to the hearts of even a super being.
Fire Resistance:
Strong enough to withstand the heat of magma swords.
Gravity:
Uses gravity control to crush any object in visual range.
Heat Vision:
Can set object ablaze just by looking at them.
Hunger:
Has enough strength to drain the energy of a super being.
Ice Resistance:
Impervious even to the cold of ice blades.
Illusion:
Can create and control multiple realistic illusions anywhere within sight.
Insect Control:
Powerful enough to control and command an entire hive of bees.
Invulnerability:
Absolutely invulnerable to physical harm of any kind.
Laser Vision
Fires powerful eye-beams that can burn through solid steel.
Magnetism:
Possesses magnetic powers strong enough to tear a slab of steel in two.
Mind Reading:
Powerful enough to invade the mind of a super being.
Molecular Disruption:
Has the power to utterly disintegrate any inorganic object with a touch.
Plant Control:
Has total control over any plants in the area.
Plasma:
Has the power to instantly melt any object into vapor.
Poison:
Dangerously toxic even to a super being.
Power Scream:
Power scream shatters stone and can be heard all across the island.
Quick Healing:
Almost indestructible; if captured, can be used to heal the injuries of others.
Animal Control:
Has absolute control over every living animal in the near area.
Shapeshifting:
Has total control over its own shape.
Shattering:
Has the power to create explosions in the immediate area.
Silence:
Aura of silence is powerful enough to temporarily deafen a super being.
Sleep:
Has the power to instantly put an entire village into deep sleep.
Slowness:
Able to rob even a super being of all speed as long as it remains nearby.
Sonics:
Blasts distant objects with powerful waves of sonic force.
Stasis Field:
Has the power to freeze a creature in near-permanent stasis through eye contact.
Teleportation:
Has the power to teleport itself through any wall or other structure.
Vacuum:
Has the power to create gale-force winds or instantly reverse their flow.
Weather Control:
Can manifest powerful, dangerous thunderstorms and blizzards at will.

Ok I hate to be one of those technical people, but I thought it'd be good for you to be informed. According to Greg Farshtey's 2008 Bionicle Encyclopedia there are actually tons of different powers of the kraata, however they just made the suits in the movie correspond with the toa's colors. For example, the red Rahkshi, Turahk, it's power is fear, not fire. Lehrak's power was acid, and so forth. There are even ones that control weird things like seismic activity and such.
Also, the Kraata have 7 potential stages of 'evolution' within the energized protodermis. Most only reach the sixth stage, and they are 'normal' kraata. However, there is a rare 7th stage of very powerful kraata. These kraata were used in the six Rahkshi used against the Toa Nuva. Most Rahkshi are actually far weaker than the ones in the Mask of Light movie.

Unfortunate as in a kraata must be immersed in energized protodermis to evolve into the lifeless Rahkshi armor that another more fortunate kraata can drive

Don't just rely on the movies for your information... There are tons of stories that explain more. Such as the fact that a Makuta (yes, several. The one you know is called Makuta Teridax) can create a Kraata out of their own body. When combined with Energized Protodermis, the Kraata turns into a suit of armor called a Rahkshi, which can only be controlled by a Kraata of the same type.
Also, you can't create life out of Protodermis. Liquid Protodermis is their equivalent of water, while solid or hardened Protodermis is like metal, they craft armor and weapons out of it, not living beings. Only the Makuta and wearers of the Kanohi Ignika, or Mask of Life, can create life.

However, a Makuta can generate a kraata from their antidermis. They still are their "sons."
