These sets are addictive.Β You start tinkering cause you don't like the stock design, and then next thing you know you're digging through a box of Bionicle parts, swearing you have just the right piece, that you really don't need to throw on some pants and shoes and run to the nearest store to pick up another Protector or two, or a few Masters and Villains if they're in stock, to use for parts...
-pauses and slaps for head-Β Duh, I should be using the Mask Maker's mostly intact torso as my base, not the PoI's.

One of these days I suspect I'll snap and spend a few hundred dollars on BrickLink on parts.

Most likely. I'll probably snap and buy a whole bunch of LEGO models as well, building and modifying them is half the fun, heck, I'm currently trying to Golden Toa-ify the new Tahu, by replacing the color of all his armor by golde ones, it's not easy since I don't think there even IS a golden version of the chestplate. Or his knee things.

Bricklink lets you search by part, then by color.
My problem is I don't have the room to build like I used to, so my desk is currently full of Bionicle figures, loose parts, and transformers.

Is Bricklink a site or something?
I know that feeling all too well.

Sadly, the diversity of color is greater than I thought, so it's not quite so easy to find the color I'm looking for, or even the part if it even exists.

Run a search for the SET you know has the part you want to swap, no matter the color.Β I'll use the plate Tahu uses as his lower torso/shins as an example.
That will bring up the set page: alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clon⦠{%22ii%22:1}
Click on the link under "Item consists of" which brings up the parts list.
Tahu's parts list: www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIβ¦
Locate the part you want an alternate color on, click the product number next to it
You get a page like this:Β alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clonβ¦
Click the link under "item Appears in" and scroll down to where it's marked in the color you want and buy one of the sets that contains it if you want to buy a bunch of spar parts.
If you want to just get the part you need you instead select the "Color Info" tab, find the color you want on the listΒ ( "Pearl Gold" seems to be the Gold they're using for the new sets) Click on that link and it brings up sellers offering that part.
alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clon⦠{%22color%22:115,%22ii%22:1}
Many steps, but not that hard.

I actually found exactly the parts I needed, I only needed 3 of them, but I can get a pack of 4 pearl gold chestplates for less than what the price would probably be at an official LEGO store. Which means I'll have made every piece of the new Toa Tahu, except his fire swords, which doesn't bother me much, and his inner workings and stuff, golden. *evil laugh complete with organ and dramatic thunder*

Don't get me wrong, I really wanted him to be able to hold it twin-handed like a Heavy Bolter from the Warhammer series I took inspiration for his design from, but it took me until my Protector of Light to figure out how to do that lol
I think it's because this guy is too beefy to wrap his arms around his body like that tbh

I definitely like the heft he's got to him, but the weapons... I mean,I know everyone else loves 'em, but I myself just... I dunno, they just don't look right to me.

Llortor In reply to IrrationallyRational [2015-07-01 03:44:10 +0000 UTC]
It's certainly a different direction to have taken them, going for something more modernly mechanical -- which is probably clashing with the ambiguously primitive society Okoto seems to have.

IrrationallyRational In reply to Llortor [2015-07-01 03:52:23 +0000 UTC]
I mean, I see where it was going, and I do like where it was going, but to me the end result of them just looks... uh... what's the word... clunky, I guess?
It's not even the fact that it's beefy and mechanical, I think for me it's because the placement is weird and off-kilter from my perspective. The saw blade in particular just invokes the same feeling that kibble does in Transformers figures.
It's not bad, but it just seems off to me is all. Not that I'd imagine anybody else thinks the same way, heh
But yeah, overall good effort. Other Protector revamps were better IMO, but this one's still got stuff goin' for him.

Once I set myself to redoing all the Protectors, I really intensely desired to have the PoI because this build is really just an exaggeration of the concepts the original set presented: a giant ice buzzsaw, and a minigun. All I could do was think about the ways I could make them more elaborate and Twisted Metal-level crazy, but perhaps I went a little too crazy lol
