Description One of Lovecraft's signature beings, the nightgaunt preys on those who dare get close to their lairs in Mount Ngranek, deep within the dreamlands. They will kidnap their victim and throw it in the abyss of the dreamland underworld.

The Elder Sign project is my quest to conceptualize all Lovecraft's signature monsters and great old ones as I imagined them from his descriptions. Look out for the investigator (or a part of him) for scale.

I'm happy to see someone has taken on Lovecraft's many creations. It must be quite a challenge to find them all? And how much of this comes from your imagination and from the writings themselves? I think it an interesting thing to see them conceptualised in other ways than writing, and I believe the corner filled out with the hat really brings out the "unaware"-feel the prey to the Nightgaunt must experience. I'm fond of the way you scratched the shadows on the paper. It tells me this is a beast I don't want to encounter on my trips to dreamland.

Yeah, believe me, it has been quite a challenge re-reading all of his stories and some poems to find reference to the creatures' backgrounds and anatomy (even clues for less-described ones). I have set up a small and simple encyclopedia for my own reference, and hope to make it some larger project someday, hopefully with my illustrations, to have some sort of Lovecraft Pocket Encyclopedia haha. The actual artwork is based on as much detail (from Lovecraft, not later collaborators as I have not found their work in my country yet) as I could find in the stories, and I try to keep then faithful to their conceptual origin (see my reply on the shoggoth). However, given that there is always a gap between the word and the drawing, I would say that even in the better-described creatures suffer from a tinge from my own mind. Glad you like the Nightgaunt by the way, and hopefully if they find you, you will speak the Ghoul code to have them fly you to better places

I'm amazed you do all this work to figure out how to be the most accurate in rather abstract/obscure motifs... Bizarre, but rewarding.
Do you get a clear image of what they look like, or do you try out several 'designs' before you figure out which is more true to Lovecraft's writings?

Well yeah, but I think the reward has been quite greater than the effort, though it has taken it's time. While at first I only had a glimpse of what Lovecraft's Mythos really meant, I can now say it has passed on to be a true fascination to me. I do try to keep my drawings as close to the descriptions, but bear in mind HPL did not really describe most of his creations. Most of them were just barely alluded and given some vague traits. I take these traits and incorporate them to the mental imagery I had while reading the story. Of course, while the general shape is there, I do have to work around 2-3 ideas before it actually makes sense on paper. Of course there are a couple of monsters described in full detail, which I follow while adding a bit of my own style (without changing the relevance of the monster)
^^
