I actually took this last fall I believe so I am posting it a bit late! That however does not diminish how tasty it was!!Shot with my manual 85mm f1.8 Nikkor.

I have made an experimentalΒ version of Shepherd's Pie.Β It is outstanding!Β
Hamburger
Tomato sauce and lots of spices for kick or
Spaghetti Sauce with more spices ( Garlic, Basil, Bay Leaf, Paprika, Cayenne Red Pepper for the bite),Β .
Mixed vegetables, usually frozen
Onions,Β bell peppers, mushrooms if you like.
Cook HB crumbly, then add to Sauce, let simmer for a little while, 30 minutes.Β Remove from heat, mix in frozen veggies.
Pour in a baking dish,Β lightly coated with olive oil or coconut oil toΒ make sure it doesn't stick.
Top with home made mashed potatoes and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 or until taters are golden brown.
(I use dehydrated onions, by the way) . Give it a try and experiment with different amounts of spices.Β Cayenne Red Pepper is pretty hot so if you are feeding young people or kiddos you might want to separate a different batch for theΒ adventurous adults.Β

Strangely.. the French for Shepard's pie is "PΓ’tΓ© chinois" in Quebec. ("chinois" means "Chinese".) I'm Chinese and I have no idea what they are talking about!

I know a little about the history behind PΓ’tΓ© Chinois but the exact origins are not known.Β
Traditionally, Shepherdβs pie (or cottage pie which is the one made with beef and not lamb) is made with leftovers as roast lamb (or beef) which has gravy to it.Β
It is said Chinese men building the Canadian railway in the 19th century, instructed by their British bosses, decided to create a lighter version of the dish by replacing the gravy with creamed corn.Β
So PΓ’tΓ© Chinois and Shepherdβs/Cottage Pie are not the same thing.Β
