Maybe her name needs an explanation. In short, her mom is a Sohma, not one of those who knows about the curse but the Sohma estate is described as having around 150 people with about 50 of them living on the 'inside' - those who knows, and the other hundred still lives on the estate but doesn't know. Chise's mom moved away as her family didn't approve of her marriage to Chise's father. They moved to Kyoto and had Ryouta (Chise's older brother) and Chise. But after a messy divorce and some other stuff, Chise and her mom moves into the estate and they change their name back to the mother's maiden name.
