It's been years since I played a good tabletop RPG. This is actually an 8 sided Backgammon doubling die. Though if I ever got the chance while playing a game that required a more normal 8 sided die I'd secretly pull this out just to see what the reaction of people is when I claim to have rolled something far higher than 8. Hilarity would ensue.
