Description
Hi,
I hope everyone had safe festive periods! I spent some of the time working on a couple of Submissions. This one is for a contest - all about bubblegum.

Bubblegum always symbolizes naughty schoolkids to me. So, in that vein I had in mind an image of Velma, in a moment of madness, acting-out and expressing some juvenile delinquency!
For art style, I wanted to have a go at the colour saturation and figure style of Alessandro Papari (b 1971). A living, working artist - he was born in Naples (like so many artists! Not least been Gian Bernini!) Alessandro's exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London and elsewhere. He draws inspiration from American art of the 1930's, and in some of his compositions you can see echoes of Hopper and others. But it's his main themes of his work that made me gravitate towards this artist for this Submission. He always attempts to "populate his canvases with predominantly isolated figures, always caught in unlikely situations."
What is more unlikely than Velma behaving with such carefree naughtiness?
I drew inspiration for the strange effect of the graffito sigil from Alessandro's depiction of fire in several of his works. Alluding to some infernal intent and supernatural origin to the sigil.
Well, there we go...I hope to squeeze a few more in before the New Year.
I hope this rendition of one legged Velma amuses more than it offends.
As always, thank you to those who stop by here and leave any encouraging words or helpful feedback.
It is always, honestly, appreciated.
Best wishes,
John
