If you are curious to catch the actor portraying Praetorius in other films (aside from "The Old Dark House" and "The Bride of Frankenstein") try to see his comic turns in "Caesar and Cleopatra" (he's the one screaming about the burning of the Library of Alexandria), the leading cloth manufacturer in England determined to destroy Alec Guinness's never wearing cloth in "The Man in the White Suit", "Dr. Trevor Lampington" inΒ  "The Last Holliday", the wealthy art collector who (unfortunately) bought several pictures from "Gully Jamison" (again Guinness) in "The Horse's Mouth", the poetry critic who help's get under Cecil Parker's skin in the section of "Quartet" called "The Colonel's Lady", and the banker frightened by Roland Young's ability to produce pound notes out of waiving his hand in the air in "The Man Who Could Perform Miracles".Β  This actor was Ernest Thesinger, who was the subject in a book Sir John Gulguid wrote years ago about various actors and actresses he worked with - Thesinger specializing in eccentrics and mad types.Β  He was the grandson of the General (played by Peter O'Toole in the film "Zulu Dawn") who command in the 1879 Zulu War, Sir Frederick Thesinger, and the great grandson of a former Lord Chancellor of Great Britain.Β  An openly gay actor (in a period where the laws were quite harsh towards sodomy in Britain), he managed to have a thriving career and display his personality rather openly.Β  Look at his biography in the International Movie Data base site (IMDb) on the internet.Β

I saw him in "The Robe" too, where he has a very restrained performance. I hardly recognized him because of that!

And he's the undertaker in the 1951 version ofΒ  "A Christmas Carol."

That's right. I forgot about that -haven't seen that version in a long while.

I was surprised to see him in it. But I was glad; he's always very enjoyable to watch, even playing sinister figures.

The real mad scientist of the Frankenstein films: DR. PRETORIOUS!

Good ol' Dr. Praetorius!!

I actually think he's the highlight of the film. Colin Clive's Frankenstein is an anxious scientist, but Praetorius is properly MAD!

That too Praetorius apparently has a few weaknesses.

He does have quite a sense of whimsy with his own little creations....And he's an incredibly MAD scientist. I like his looks. Peter Cushing's characters are like him.
