His discovery is FAR worse than when I saw my cousin had eleven toes, 7 on the left and 4 on the right😱

Thanks! It's not one of Lovecraft's most well-known tales, but it does pack a punch.

Despite the clear racist elements it’s an interesting conceptΒ

The time in which this story was written, Lovecraft's archaic fears weren't out of place at all. In this case, they go beyond casual racism and into beastiality, which makes the story unsettling even today.

What would Lovecraft have made of the clear genetic evidence of Europeans having a tiny but consistent amount of Neanderthal blood? Would he advocate mass suicide? On the other hand, the only people WITHOUT either Neanderthal or Denisovan blood are pure Africans, and given his low opinion them to start with, it makes me wonder how he might rationalize it.

I think Lovecraft would've found the info fascinating, and that he would've made some use of it in his stories, if only as a passing reference. He had his strong opinions about stuff but seems to have been at his core a level-headed gentleman. I feel that he wouldn't have allowed himself any overreactions of an extreme kind.

Huh. So what if this poor fellow had NOT discovered his ancestry, and went on passing his bloodline down for several more generations? How dilute would have been enough for Lovecraft to consider human enough to live with it?

One of his ancestors had sex with a white ape, and poor Arthur takes that info rather badly.

I'd probably find it pretty disturbing myself if I had learned that one of my had committed an act of bestiality and I was a product of that. I guess it explains, though, why he looks pretty apish.

I we go back far enough, I think we all have a gorilla (or something like it) in our families.

This story is usually quite derided for its content. I think it's a perfectly wrought little tale. Probably quite personal too.

Chaosfive-55 In reply to Loneanimator [2017-09-20 11:22:26 +0000 UTC]

It's been said that all art is basically self-portraiture in one form or another,
and Lovecraft's tales are no exception; Arthur Jermyn, Delapore, even the weird hybrid
Wilbur Whateley all share HP's fears about his own ancestry and legacy.
