Description The Hitchhiker's Guide To the GalaxyΒ calls the bugblatter beast the stupidest creature in the entire universe - so profoundly unintelligent that, if you can't see it, it assumes it can't see you. A towel is the perfect tool to cover your head with when encountering the beast, and thereby escaping it.

Perfect....a biological monument to sheer predator majesty and incredible stupidity. If there was ever another Hitchhikers movie and a Bugblatter Beast was needed, I'd vote for this fellow. That facet atop its head is a real chuckle. Β

I found some summary descriptions of the Bugblatter Beast online, from various Hitchhiker's sources, and that faucet was mentioned. But I think this critter is left purposely vague, so we can fill in the details ourselves.

I think you're right; it's always best when describing a beast, person, ship etc. to not give too many details and allow the readers' imagination to work.

Mostly I'd say it's about giving the reader just enough details, and the right details. It takes a skilled writer to do that.

I must remember this the next time I'm trying to escape from a really dumb monster! I read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy years ago, but I must have forgotten this part.

The books mostly just refer to the bugblatter beast in ways like:
"The Vogons wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders – signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters.Β

The beast is sort of the worst thing you can encounter, after the Vogons.

is this an alien?

It's an alien animal from the planet Traal. According to the "Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy" novels, not many have met a bugblatter beast and lived to tell the tale.

From this drawing, the Bugblatter Beast must be related to my ex.

This is a hilarious drawing.

Pretty damn funny, need to get my hands on that book sometime. I loved Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the British are pretty great at absurdist humor.

I was wondering, have you checked out the Adult Swim series "Rick and Morty". It's basically Back to the Future meets Doctor Who meets HP Lovecraft on illegal substances. PACKED with great sci fi references, I'm pretty sure you would love it.

Douglas Adams was, in my humble opinion, a genius. His humor is incredibly funny, very human and also very smart. The "Hitchhiker" books deal with all sorts of existentialist questions, but in a lighthearted way. Also check out the audiobooks, which are very well produced. You'll find all of them uploaded on YouTube.

No, I haven't seen Rick and Morty yet, but I'll check it out Β

HUBLERDON In reply to Loneanimator [2016-08-26 19:06:52 +0000 UTC]

I'll try to get it someday.

Man, you would LOVE that show. It's made by Justin Roiland, who voices Lemongrab on Adventure Time, and Dan Harmon, who writes Community. TONS of great science fiction references, both visual and in jokes, including ones to Zardoz, Flash Gordon, Michael Crichton, Stephen King, HP Lovecraft and David Cronenberg. Its wonderfully weird and insane, combines absurdism, meta, shock and dark humor perfectly! It's also very heavy on the cosmic horror part, and uses the setting of a multiverse to disturbing and hilarious effect. At least watch the first half of season 1, you can find the whole series on Kisscartoon, Video Dailymotion or certain channels on YouTube. Even better, Season 3's coming out by the end of the year! Perfect time to get started!

Thanks! That's what it looked like in my mind, though it was never properly described in the books. Most people who encountered it were eaten.
