I've never seen anything like that! His nostrils are sooo damaged.. it looks like little horns or something... Do you know what happened to him? was he rescued?

?? Are they 'damaged'? Is that what makes them look like that? I had no idea, but always thought they didn't quite look right. Yes, he was a rescued Eagle. All of the Eagles at the zoo are ones that have been injured in some way and aren't able to live in the wild any longer. If I'm not mistaken, it's the only legal way they can even have Eagles in captivity by Federal law.

Well, I think something had to happen to him, because this is not the natural shape.. you can compare it to these photos: [link] [link] [link] - as you can see the top of the beak should be flat, a bit curved. This one looks like someone was pulling his nostrils out or something... a lot of bad weird things happen before rescuing raptors...
By the way, there are more ways to get an eagle or any raptor in the US and have it in captivity. In certain time during the year you can trap red tails, I'm not sure about bald eagles, but there are more than enough or them in northern states, sometimes they are even considered as pests. more than hundred of those big monsters at one place... plus you can import bred ones or buy from some breeders in the US.

Thank you Edie. I'm so pleased when I get one that is close to right. It's so hard to photograph Bald Eagles...either the head is too bright or the body is too dark.
