Hey guys! Hope you've all been doing well. I didn't do much digital art this month, shifting focus to other areas. But I'm happy to finally post something new!
When I was just starting this last week, I wrote on Twitter:
"I am reassessing my priorities as an artist. Do I have to be excited about everything I work on? Sometimes I just want to stick to what I know instead of constantly trying to make a groundbreaking masterpiece. (...) I’m working on a new drawing right now but I’m not excited when I think about it, it’s just meh. I’m not sure if I should be excited about everything I work on or not."
Basically, I felt bored with the drawing itself. There's nothing new or interesting that it introduces to my work, just the usual anime girl and sparkly flowers that I always draw. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to go further with the sketch. I pressed on and it turns out I actually love the end result! Getting myself lost in the details was a soothing distraction from the stress of current events.
I got some wonderful and insightful replies to my Twitter post. The lesson I learned is that I still struggle with perfection in more ways than one. I don't need to constantly produce masterpiece after masterpiece- just stick with what I know, and slowly incorporate new ideas so I don't get overwhelmed. I'm trying to find that balance between consistency and novelty.

I really love this. I adore the atmosphere, the colour scheme and her serene expression. Everything feels very peaceful and soothing, while also magical. A wonderful feeling honestly.
I'm glad you kept at it with this one, it really turned into something special.
I find what you said very relatable. I also sometimes find myself overthinking about my artworks and their subject matter, so much so that sometimes I end up doing nothing at all...and at one point I found myself asking if everything I make has to be some kind of a masterpiece? Well I felt that it was such a silly idea for each and everything to be a masterpiece and it wasn't worth overthinking about it if it stopped me from creating and growing as an artist. And of course along the way masterpieces will be made. Plus there's so many ways to create something, even if it is as basic as a pretty girl. And I think you've done a very lovely job of it too

Thank you so much Noxmoony! Very well said. Sometimes you just gotta DO it. If you look at an accomplished artist's portfolio you'll find a lot of their works are very similar. They're good at painting a particular subject so they keep at it. I guess I'm trying to find that balance, I want to be consistent but not repetitive.

Ain't that the truth! And you're so right, a lot of them do stick to a few things and do it very well. Personally it's not for me but I do want to maintain some form of consistency amidst the variety of things I do enjoy working on...In the sense that I want to do enough of each so there's not too much of say just portraits or just environment artworks Although I do tend to do more character based stuff lololol so I guess there will always be a slight bias in that direction. I know what you mean. Consistent but not repetitive...well put. I hope you can find that balance

The picture turned out beautifully! I totally get feeling bored about your art, but I think the draw what you know and add new things in strategy will work well. Especially since that'll make it easier to focus on certain elements you may want to improve on, as opposed to trying to do 50 new things all at once.

each of your work is a masterpiece in my own opinion. Dont be too hard on yourself and dont focus too much on the result but instead on the process. I tell myself this too because im the kind of person that gets bored very easily
Art has become a good distraction and therapeutic activity for me as well. It works same way for a lot of artists out there

Totally agreed. I really enjoy the artistic process- well most of the time, anyway! I also get bored easily so maybe that's why I'm always trying to outdo myself because I crave something different.
