Earlier this year I had this crazy idea to do a series of paintings based on the history of architecture - it was quite an ambitious project, I wanted to do all these little studies and sketches and slowly build up to large epic scenes of different cities in each era and culture (in different times of day and weather conditions, even!).

After finishing up this one (it's the first) I just kinda... stopped, lol. I still have all those notes and drawings in my folder somewhere. Perhaps I'll get back to it someday.

Anyway! This painting was based off a whole bunch of ancient Mesopotamian, Assyrian and Babylonian references I found off google. Lot's of tiered and geometric structural design, and of course, a ziggurat! I tried to go through a whole "design process" with this one, what with sketches and thumbnail comps and everything.

I'm actually really happy with how this one turned out. It started with some sketchy linework before adding more and more layers of photoshop paint on top. I remember the pillars being an absolute pain to draw correctly, so I gave up and ended up using 3D for them instead (can you tell?)
