Often wondered whether the horses of native americans are fitted with horse shoes. Β  For that matter, since native americans don't have metal casting or forging capabilities, where do they get things like the metal blades for tomahawks, metal arm bands etc.? Β  Β Just curious.

They didn't use horse shoes. Saddle frames or stirrups were made from wood with leather shrinkwrap covering. Tomahakwks were mostly produced in US factories for the Indian trade. Same thing with metal knifes, knife blades, metal arrowheads and even bone pipes for breatsplates, the latter was made in a factory in New Jersey...

Indians were very good at recycling though. They would make arrowheads out of iron barrel rings or even telegraph pole insulators. After firing a gun bullet, Indians would take pains to find the ejected shell for reuse. They would buy gun powder from a local trader by the pound, lead and the smallest availlable ignition plate. They would lead-cast a bullet head, put the ignition plate and gun powder into the shell, fit the newly cast lead head onto the shell - and voilΓ‘, the recycled gun bullet! Bullet shells would sometimes be reused 50 to 60 times, and, as the Indians said, the Indian-made gun bullets were almost as good as the brandnew ones.

Uhm... not voluntarily... in the very beginning I once hung in that position... not for very long... I was thrown off three times during my first riding lesson, and I have managed to avoid like experiences ever since.
