And then thlabber happened. It was a traditional magic term, although Moist didn’t know this. There was a moment in which everything, even things that couldn’t be stretched, felt stretched. And then there was the moment when everything suddenly went back to not being stretched, known as the moment of thlabber.
- Terry Pratchett, Going Postal
Moist waited. Lord Vetinari could outstare a statue and make even a statue start to feel nervous and confess. Moist's counter was a fetching grin, which he knew annoyed Vetinari beyond measure, and there was absolute silence in the Oblong Office while blank stare and cheery grin battled it out for supremacy in some other dimension.
- Terry Pratchett, Raising Steam
Looking out the window, Moist saw a small swarm of goblins leave the train and at first he thought, ha! Trust the buggers to run away, and then he mentally corrected himself: that was storybook thinking and with clearer eyesight and a bit of understanding he realized that the goblins were scrambling up to the delvers on the rocks and beating the shit out of them by diving into the multiple layers of dwarf clothing. The delvers discovered all too rapidly that trying to fight while a busy goblin was in your underwear was very bad for the concentration.
- Terry Pratchett, Raising Steam
“Do you understand what I'm saying?" shouted Moist. "You can't just go around killing people!"
"Why Not? You Do." The golem lowered his arm.
"What?" snapped Moist. "I do not! Who told you that?"
"I Worked It Out. You Have Killed Two Point Three Three Eight People," said the golem calmly.
"I have never laid a finger on anyone in my life, Mr Pump. I may be–– all the things you know I am, but I am not a killer! I have never so much as drawn a sword!"
"No, You Have Not. But You Have Stolen, Embezzled, Defrauded And Swindled Without Discrimination, Mr Lipvig. You Have Ruined Businesses And Destroyed Jobs. When Banks Fail, It Is Seldom Bankers Who Starve. Your Actions Have Taken Money From Those Who Had Little Enough To Begin With. In A Myriad Small Ways You Have Hastened The Deaths Of Many. You Do Not Know Them. You Did Not See Them Bleed. But You Snatched Bread From Their Mouths And Tore Clothes From Their Backs. For Sport, Mr Lipvig. For Sport. For The Joy Of The Game.”

Dear Mr Lipwig,
I feel that you are a dear, sweet man who will look after my little Mr Fusspot. Please be kind to him. He has been my only friend in difficult times. Money is such a crude thing in these circumstances, but the sum of $20,000 annually will be paid to you (in arrears) for performing this duty, which I beg you to accept.
If you do not, or if he dies of unnatural causes, your arse will belong to the Guild of Assassins. $100,000 is lodged with Lord Downey, and his young gentlemen will hunt you down and gut you like the weasel you are, Smart Boy!
May the gods bless you for your kindness to a widow in distress.” - Terry Pratchett Making Money

I imagine Terry Pratchett did a lot of observation of horses, otherwise how could he describe their bonkers temperament so accurately? I love horses but they are mad things.

Ohhhhh that book was great, shame rising steam wasn’t actually about moist.
Still, making money and going postal we’re great.

Indeed! Raising steam was the only Discworld novel I struggled with - but I loved Going Postal and Making Money.

I think because it was shadow writen and with making money’s hinting towards taxing. Being handed a book not about moist or taxes was a little hard to take.

Ah, it's a pity that whoever was responsible for importing the series into Italy worked under the delusion that the books were all trilogies. Good think I can read English as well. [note: so that means that we never got to know basically anyone past Feet of Clay and Soul Music, more or less, someone should be forced to say the M-world in the Unseen Library, if you ask me!)

There was a reprint recently, but apparently it wasn't very successful so they stopped at "Equal Rites". There's also no way to get most books except buying them at outrageous prices from private collectors (or steal them from libraries, but I've standards. Plus, I could need the library later, you never know...)

I didn't read the book but I recently saw the miniseries (2010) and I loved it (especially David Suchet playing Reacher Gilt)!
Moist is a fun character and finding that gold pen was definitely a sign: he looks positively dashing/roguish in gold!

Excellent representation of the character. I have the sudden urge to trust him and give him my money.
Oddly, whenever Commander Vimes appears in his own stories, he's the good guy, fighting for truth, justice, and the Ankh-Morpork way. However, whenever he appears in one of the stories featuring Moist, he's the BAD guy. Moist doesn't like him at all.
