In his cardboard boots?

I thought it was just cardboard in the soles, rather than the whole boot. I could be wrong though!

I believe you're right in the soles being cardboard.  And he could tell where he was by the feel of the street.

“Everybody does it!" Quirke burst out. "It's perks!"
"Everybody?" said Vimes. He looked around at the squad. "Anyone else here take bribes?"
His glare ran from face to face, causing most of the squad to do an immediate impression of the Floorboard and Ceiling Inspectors Synchronized Observation Team.
― Terry Pratchett, Night Watch

The plain old Sam Vimes had fought back. He got rid of most of the plumes and the stupid tights, and ended up with a dress uniform that at least looked as though its owner was male. But the helmet had gold decoration, and the bespoke armourers had made a new, gleaming breastplate with useless gold ornamentation on it. Sam Vimes felt like a class traitor every time he wore it. He hated being thought of as one of those people that wore stupid ornamental armour. It was gilt by association.
― Terry Pratchett, Night Watch

Vimes had once discussed the Ephebian idea of ‘democracy’ with Carrot and had been rather interested in the idea that everyone* had a vote until he found out that while he, Vimes, would have a vote, there was no way in the rules that  anyone could prevent Nobby Nobbs from having one as well.  Vimes could see the flaw there straight away.
*Apart from the women, children, slaves, idiots and people who weren’t really our kind of people
― Terry Pratchett, The Fifth Elephant

"Ah, this must be the famous Ankh-Morpork sense of humour, yes?"
"No, that was just irony," Vimes shouted, still looking for an arboreal escape route.  "You’ll know when we’ve got on to the famous Ankh-Morpork sense of humour when I start talking about breasts and farting, you smug bastard!"

I don't know how it was in the original version: in Italian it sounded like this "I have a dragon and I'm not afraid to use it!"
It's impossible not to love Vimes <3

I tried to read the books in English, but I missed too many puns and had to give up.
Unfortunately, they didn't translate all of them and many have been out of print for a lot of years. ç___ç

like how the character turned out - sort of like between Pete Postlethwaite and Clint Eastwood - who would you say could do the part if they ever do a film version of it ?

Loopydave In reply to menapia [2019-03-29 07:09:18 +0000 UTC]

I have always been keen to see Hugh Laurie play the part, but if we could find someone between Pete Postlethwaite and Clint they would be perfect!

ArminiusWillabert In reply to menapia [2018-12-23 12:15:45 +0000 UTC]

I would probably choose Hugh Laurie.

menapia In reply to ArminiusWillabert [2018-12-23 20:00:23 +0000 UTC]

He could probably give the part that cynical attitude you get from the character in the book, of course they'd have to find someone to play Patrician Vetinari

Loopydave In reply to menapia [2018-12-24 03:14:06 +0000 UTC]

I would like to see Hugh Laurie in the roll as well... that's two votes so far!

ArminiusWillabert In reply to Loopydave [2019-01-03 10:47:51 +0000 UTC]

And if you're looking for a Vetinari, what about Benedict Cumberbatch or Joaquin Phoenix?

sir loopy, ate you using white ink on those part specially on the neck?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to tangnamoo [2018-11-03 11:34:35 +0000 UTC]

I did a very light pencil, then I used an art masking fluid to block out his shape, painted the background brush strokes on, removed the fluid. I had a bit of a smudge, but it was were his armour was and I just used it as part of the drawing. I inked Vimes and the dragon with a fine felt tip and a fineliner pen. There was a little bit of white pen work over a couple of areas, but interestingly not over the neck area. The smoke curl was created with a masking pen before the background paint and the dry brushing on his pants involved me cutting a trouser shaped stencil out of a piece of paper so the brush strokes wouldn’t leave the area.
Probably far more than you were interested in knowing, but there you have it

I remember watching an episode of Waking the Dead with Trevor Eve as Peter Boyd (he was losing his temper over something); now when I'm reading Sir Samuel I'm seeing Trevor.  It's like Charles Dance as the Patrician, even though he doesn't quite look like a predatory flamingo, I can't shake it.  Anyhoo...

jhwood9 [2018-10-12 02:59:34 +0000 UTC]

Superb rendition.  I like your design of the character better than my own mental image (I envisioned more of a pathetic drunk, as he appears in his first appearances).

In one of his interviews, DiscWorld author Pratchett mentions that Vimes is one of his own favorite characters, and that Vimes had a tendency to "take over" the narrative when introduced into stories featuring other characters.

Loopydave In reply to jhwood9 [2018-10-12 13:12:30 +0000 UTC]

I remember hearing that observation... not a surprise he was a Pratchett favourite, particularly seeing the way he was written and developed.
Cheers!

I know. Couldn't get enough of it. Fifth elephant was my introduction to the series, and when i found out how many more there were, i was completely hooked! Vime's is just such a good character. It's so sad the we lost terry pratchet because i would have loved to read more.
