"Oh, I appreciate the gesture, mi amor, but your abuelita can handle herself. Mira, mind that tree root."

In her eagerness, Primrose stumbled over an oak root that stretched across the path. She squawked and madly flapped her wings, trying to correct herself before she hit the ground. Startled, she swung her head to gawk back at her grandmother. Although her abuela's eyes were glassy and unseeing, they still managed to twinkle with amusement.

"Abuelita, how'd you-" Primrose's muzzle scrunched up in confusion. "I-I mean, you're bli-"

"I'm not blind, pequeña." Noche Bella chuckled. "So long as this old bat can hum and hear, I can see better than any one of you chumps. I get by just fine with mi ecolocalización- You know your papi wanted to get me one of those yappy little dogs to lead me around? Ha! He insults me!"

Primrose frowned a little. "....Daddy said there's nothing wrong with getting a service dog. He just wants you to be safe."

Noche Bella snorted a laugh. "And what does that pendejo know about safety? Nocturnus thinks he's so big and tough now as one of La Luna's soldiers, but I remember when he was a teeny little foal, always running under my legs with tears in his eyes, or cactus spines in his ass. 'Mami, ayuda! I crash-landed in the cactus patch again!"

Primrose giggled scandalous, hiding her grin behind her hooves. "Abuelita, you shouldn't talk about Daddy when he's not around!"

Noche cackled, wrapping her wing around her granddaughter. "Ay, you're right, mi querida nieta." And the pair of them exchanged toothy, conspiratorial grins.

"....Why talk about Nocturnus behind his back, when we could drag up embarrassing foalhood stories to his face?"

in this old drawing: there's mention of deathly ill young Primrose being tended to by a grandmother while Nocturnus is on guard duty, and a while back some people asked to see that barely-mentioned character. who am i to deny

Noche Bella is Nocturnus' mother, and Primrose's grandmother. Although she's lost her eyesight in her old age, she prides herself on being 100% self-reliant, and gets around via finely-honed echolocation (all bat ponies can use some degree of sonar, but Noche has really fine-tuned her own abilities). Noct is a good son and maybe a bit too fussy and overbearing in his care for his mother, so Noche really gets a kick out of messing with her son, be it by flirting outrageously with other elderly ponies at bingo night, joining a daredevil stunt flying circus, or pretending to have died to get out of boring social obligations (though Noct just tells her to get up and quit being such a drama queen). Noche was quite close to Noct's wife, Willow: , and mourned quietly with her son when Willow died young. Primrose is the beloved apple of Noche's eye, and often gets roped along into senior hijinks.

Noche will eventually eagerly assimilate Noct's new partner, Chakra Blossom, into her sphere of grandmotherly attempts to overfeed her loved ones because they look thin, and fussing about whether they’re warm enough (oh, how Chakra enjoys watching big bad soldier Noct get cowed into wearing an itchy wool sweater by a teeny old lady)
